Every human wasn’t born equal but desired to be treated equally amongst others but that can’t be possible because there might be a problem if all humans were treated equally, I’m @cleevesh welcome to my blog.
Equality
Equality is the notion of treating all people equally, regardless of their tribe, race, color etc. This can be a good beginning point for ensuring fairness and justice, especially when there are clear and objective decision-making standards. However, where there are considerable differences or inequalities, a completely equal strategy may not be enough to handle these challenges.
A quick scenario, in the area of gender equality there tends to be a lot of biases in that context which I would be covering later in this blog. The whole idea of equality is woman gets equal opportunities as men get and the same goes otherwise but there was an incident that happened in Ukraine and Russia, men from 18 - 60 were asked to remain in the country and the women were allowed to live the country but the “feminists” who are all about gender equality did not see any reason why they should be given the opportunity to stay in the country to fight as well, here comes the bias “Equality” in the context of gender equality only becomes a thing if it favors the feminine gender but what about the male gender, that's where ”Equity” comes in my second segment of this blog post.
Equity
Equity is a fairness and justice philosophy that focuses on ensuring that everyone gets the resources, opportunity, and support they require to reach their full potential. Basically, we are getting different opportunities that best fit us, and if they are executed well ” Equality” would be served.
A quick scenario, imagine there is a fence and there are three people trying to look beyond the fence, the first person is taller than the second person and the second person is taller than the first person, basically, the first person is the tallest and the third person is the shortest. If they were all given the same 3feets ladder to see through, as equality says but we go through this which is obviously not possible, the shortest person won't get the same opportunities as the tallest person but if we implement ” Equity” the shortest to the tallest person would be given different length of the ladder and the three of them would be able to see what's beyond the fence. With this “Equally” would be served.
There’s a several categories of equality and I’ll be sharing a few and explaining why there can’t be equality in all this context and why the only thing that can be implemented is equity
There are several categories of equality, including
- Social equality: This refers to the equal treatment of all individuals in society, regardless of their race, gender, sexuality, religion, or other personal characteristics.
It is unlikely that complete social equality can be achieved without biases, as biases are deeply ingrained in individuals and societal structures. However social equality can't be achieved 100% because there are different humans with different ways of thinking.
in the area of social equality, an equity approach would recognize that individuals from different backgrounds may face different forms of discrimination and bias, and would work to address these inequalities through targeted interventions and support.
- Economic equality: This refers to equal access to economic resources and opportunities, including education, employment, and wealth.
Equality can't be achieved because there are people that work twice as hard as others so whatever economical benefit they receive over the rest is as a product of every individual’s work.
in terms of economic equality, an equity approach would recognize that different individuals and communities may face different barriers to accessing economic resources and opportunities. To achieve economic equality, an equity approach would work to identify and address these barriers, providing targeted support and resources to those who face the greatest challenges.
Finally
An equity approach emphasizes that genuine equality involves not only equal treatment, but also the provision of resources, opportunity, and assistance to ensure that everyone may reach their full potential in all of these categories. We may try to create a more just and fair society where everyone has the opportunity to prosper by concentrating on equity.
Both equality and equity are important principles to practice, and they are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. NB: Equity is also for those who worked for it.
Thank you so much for reading, until I see you next time, remain blessed.
