Flutterbys, Flowers, And Floods

in #hive-1949132 years ago

It's flutterby season here in Kentucky! Apparently it's also monsoon season. Mentioned in my last post that we had rain a comin' and it damn sure made its way here.

Louisville managed to dodge the worst of it, but southeastern Kentucky wasn't so lucky. My hometown didn't get flooded this time but everything east of it did, with some areas seeing up to 9 inches (23cm) of rain in 12 hours. With all that water heading downstream and more rain a coming my hometown isn't out of the woods yet either.

Since the news is no fun it seemed to call for some photos that were. The zinnias and black eyed susans are loving this rain, which seems to make the bees and flutterbys happy.

We've even had goldfinches and hummingbirds stop by for a snack but they seem to be camera shy. The goldfinches actually land on the zinnia stalks and peck at the center of the flower while the hummingbirds do it at a hover. Now if only they will do that while I'm out with my camera...

The monarchs should be starting to flutter by soon but so far it's just been black swallowtail and eastern tiger swallowtail.

Now if only this rain would flutter on by and be done with us...

So pretty! Did you use your 300mm with these as well? Butterflies are so hard to take photos of cos they instantly fly away the second they hear your footstep from 20 feet away lol.

Thank you! I think I shot these with the 50mm prime lens, the 300mm's longer focal length makes it a bit more unwieldy. They are! We've had some monarch butterflies in the yard for the past few days but they won't let me get close enough to get a good shot yet. Sooner or later though...

Wow only 50mm and you managed to take some shots? They must have been so busy sucking the nectar out of those flowers haha

Gorgeous complimentary colors of butterflies and flowers!💜💛🦋💛💜

Glad you are okay. The recent rainfalls were horrific. I'm watching on the news footage of a few stranded (lucky) Kentucky folks being airlifted from theirs flooded rooftops.

Here where I live in the suburbs of St. Louis we had 12" of rain on Tuesday and almost 3" more on Wednesday. It was an unbelievable, record breaking event to experience! Take care!

Thank you!

That rain was something else. Those kind of downpours aren't that unusual (we called'em gullywashers growing up) but the duration of these were something else entirely. It's wild, the county I grew up in borders 3 of the counties that got hit hard but they didn't see anywhere near the same amount of rain. Lost Creek, which CNN keeps showing stills and footage of is only 28 miles from my homeplace.

That's insane, glad you're ok! When I think of St Louis flooding it's the 93 flood that comes to mind but these flash flood are something else entirely. Stay safe!

Wonderful captures @coloneljethro 😁they do brighten up bad news.
Sorry to hear about the rain and flooding.
Do take care!

Thank you! I mean things can't be all bad if you've still got butterflies and flowers :)
I'll do my best!

You are welcome @coloneljethro 😁
Nope… as long as we have such beauty around us… it will for sure cheer us up and let us appreciate nature even more.
Have a good Friday!

Such gorgeous photos each and everyone I have seen stories about the terrible flooding in some parts of the country do devestating then other parts of the country/world suffering horrible droughts it’s crazy

Thank you! Yeah it's wild, the southwestern US is about to run out of water and it just keeps flooding here. This is second major flood in as many years down in eastern KY. If the rain and the heat keep it up like it's been doing we're going to end up with a tropical climate around here...

Ohh yeah the weather patterns have changed so much it’s absolutely crazy

Wow, the photography you show is very cool.

Thank you!

You're welcome.

Beautiful photos. This post reminded me of the beautiful morning I had today. Thank you so much for sharing it. Sorry to hear about the monsoon season, hope everything gets better soon.

Thanks! You're more than welcome, glad you enjoyed it. I hope you so to, thank you.
