In this week 15, after several weeks without being able to participate for reasons totally beyond my control, I come this time with my recorder to share with you a very beautiful song that made known one of the most important bands in the world - not to mention say “the most important” -. You may have already noticed that I am referring to The Beatles, the boys from Liverpool. Those that gave rise to Beatlemania worldwide.
Among their super melodic and full rhythmic songs, I selected “Yesterday” to share it with you.
Why “Yesterday”? Because this is a song that has history in my life.
I was about 9 years old when I heard it performed for the first time by a student from the Ángel Briceño Music School, here in Villa de Cura, my town, located in the state of Aragua in Venezuela. I saw the title of the song and pronounced it “Yesterdái”, as it is written, and accentuating the “a” not “Yésterdei” with an accent on the first “e” which is correct.
Then it filled me with nostalgia, I didn't know what it meant because I didn't understand English, but the melody is what fills me, the melody is what really calls one as an artist, a melody that reaches the intuition of each artist. Not everyone has the same intuition, that is personal.
It came to me at that moment, so I spoke to the director of the orchestra. I was about nine years old, I was just starting out on the recorder. Then I asked him for the sheet music - of the melody, of course -.
The melody was carried by the mandolin and, as I was learning to read sheet music, I started little by little. After a week I had it assembled and I really liked it. At the same time, I found out that the group that played it was called The Beatles. Then they gave me an acetate record, an LP. – “Give it to me here” and I searched and it had “Yesterday”. I turned that record so much that I scratched it. I could never listen to it again. That was horrible for me.
Afterwards they gave me a tape, a more updated cassette, of The Beatles. Again the same story; From turning the tape so much it burst. And in this day and age I still listen to it a lot because it fills me up. In fact, I plan to make a cycle of pure Beatles songs and pure songs that were heard a lot in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
I grew up in an environment, with my mother, listening to pure music from the 60s, 70s and 80. I listen to pure music that they call “old music” or “retro music” because it is the music that fills me the most.
My mother told me that when she was in the process of gestating my person, she had a little radio and she placed it on her abdomen – or, as we say in colloquial language “on her belly” – she would fall asleep with the little radio on in a station where in the early morning they broadcast pure “retro” music – which at that time was not called that, it was simply called “old music.” In other words, since I was in the belly I was already listening to that music.
As Luis Aguilé's song says: “For that and many more things…” I decided to start my retro music cycle with this song full of nostalgia and “saudade”

En esta semana 15, después de varias semanas sin poder participar por motivos totalmente alejados de mi voluntad, vengo esta vez con mi flauta dulce a compartir con ustedes una canción muy hermosa que diera a conocer una de las bandas más importantes del mundo – por no decir “la más importante” -. Ya se habrán dado cuenta que me refiero a Los Beatles, los chicos de Liverpool. Los que dieron lugar a la Beatlemanía a nivel mundial.
Entre sus canciones super melódicas y full rítmicas seleccioné “Yesterday” para compartirla con ustedes.
¿Por qué “Yesterday”? Porque esta es una canción que tiene historia en mi vida.
Tendría yo como 9 años cuando la escuché por primera vez interpretada por una estudiantina de la Escuela de Música Ángel Briceño, acá en Villa de Cura, mi pueblo, ubicado en el estado Aragua en Venezuela. Yo vi el título de la canción y la pronunciaba “Yesterdái”, como se escribe, y acentuando la “a” no “Yésterdei” con acento en la primera “e” que es lo correcto. Entonces me llenó de nostalgia, yo sin saber qué quería decir porque no entendía el inglés, pero la melodía es la que me llena, la melodía es lo que realmente llama a uno como artista, una melodía que llegue a lo intuitivo de cada artista. No todos tienen la misma intuición, eso es personal.
Me llegó a mí en ese momento, entonces hablé con el director de la orquesta. Yo tendría unos nueve años, estaba comenzando con la flauta dulce. Entonces le pedí la partitura - de la melodía, por supuesto -. La melodía la llevaba la mandolina y yo, como estaba aprendiendo a leer partituras, empecé poco a poco.
Al cabo de una semana la tenía ya montada y me gustó mucho y después. al tiempo, me enteré que el grupo que la tocaba se llamaba Los Beatles. Después me regalaron un disco de acetato, un LP. – “Démelo acá” y busqué y tenía “Yesterday”. Tanta vuelta le di a ese disco que lo rayé. No lo pude escuchar más nunca. Eso fue horrible para mi.
Después me regalaron una cinta, un cassette, ya más actualizado, de Los Beatles. Otra vez la misma historia; de tanto darle vuelta la cinta se me reventó. Y en esta era de hoy en día sigo escuchándolo mucho porque me llena. De hecho pienso hacer un ciclo de puras canciones de los Beatles y puros temas de los que se escucharon bastante en los años 60, 70 y 80.
Yo me crié en un ambiente, con mi mamá, escuchando pura música de los 60, 70 y 80. Yo escucho pura música de esa que llaman “música vieja” o “música retro” porque es la música que más me llena.
Mi mamá me contaba que cuando estaba en pleno proceso de gestación de mi persona, ella tenía un radiecito y se lo colocaba sobre el abdomen – o, como decimos en lenguaje coloquial “sobre la barriga” – se quedaba dormida con el radiecito encendido en una emisora donde en la madrugada transmitían pura música “retro” – que en esa época no se llamaba así, se le decía simplemente “música vieja”.
O sea, que desde que estaba en la barriga ya yo escuchaba esa música. Como dice la canción de Luis Aguilé: “Por eso y muchas cosas más…” decidí comenzar mi ciclo de música retro con esta canción llena de nostalgia y “saudade”
