El día de ayer, 22 de noviembre de 2023, se conoció una noticia bomba en el mundo de las criptomonedas: Changpeng Zhao, mejor conocido como CZ, fundador y CEO de Binance, ha renunciado.
Esto es algo verdaderamente trascendental e impactante. Binance no es una empresa cualquiera, es EL exchange de criptomonedas número 1 del mundo. Es una plataforma gigante, con enormes volúmenes de operaciones diarias, que lidera el mercado con mucha ventaja sobre sus competidores.
Y CZ no es un CEO al uso. Es toda una celebridad, un líder carismático que ha sido la cara visible de Binance y un referente mundial de las criptomonedas durante años. Su imagen ha estado asociada al crecimiento y popularización de este nuevo sistema financiero.
Así que su repentina renuncia prende todas las alarmas sobre el futuro del sector. ¿Qué hay detrás de esto? ¿Se avecina una crisis? Analicemos en detalle los hechos.
La dimisión de CZ en el contexto de problemas legales
La salida de CZ se da en el contexto de múltiples problemas legales y regulatorios que Binance ha enfrentado con agencias gubernamentales de EEUU durante los últimos años.

Queda claro que con estas acciones, el Departamento de Justicia de EEUU ha decidido acabar definitivamente con las operaciones de Binance en su territorio. La compañía deberá cerrar Binance.US, su filial local, y le será absolutamente prohibido hacer negocios con ciudadanos o empresas estadounidenses.
Esto frustra la ambición que tuvo CZ de conquistar el lucrativo mercado de su país natal. Recordemos que en sus primeros años, Binance obtenía casi un tercio de sus volúmenes comerciales de usuarios radicados en Norteamérica.
Esta disputa legal-financiera-regulatoria ha puesto fin al sueño americano de Binance de manera abrupta. Y provocó la primera gran crisis existencial de esta joven pero poderosa empresa, que motivó finalmente la salida de su director ejecutivo.
Coinbase y los ETFs, los nuevos reyes del mundo cripto
Muchos analistas consideran que detrás de esta decisión de acabar con la influencia de Binance en EEUU subyace en realidad un plan mucho más amplio.
En los últimos años han surgido dos actores que amenazan con alterar definitivamente el tablero de juego de las criptomonedas: Coinbase y los ETFs (fondos de inversión cotizados).

Tanto Coinbase como los ETFs son iniciativas completamente made in USA. Los reguladores de ese país están facilitando su desarrollo para que las empresas y ciudadanos americanos sean los principales beneficiarios del boom de las criptomonedas.
Sacando a Binance del medio, el camino queda expedito para que estas alternativas domesticadas, 100% bajo control estadounidense, pasen a dominar el sector.
El juicio a Binance como advertencia al mundo cripto
Queda claro que lo ocurrido no se trata sólo del pago de una multa o de cerrar una filial. Es una advertencia, muy clara y contundente, a cualquier empresa o institución del mundo cripto: o hacen las cosas bajo las reglas y supervisión del Tío Sam, o sufrirán consecuencias mayores.
La sangrienta batalla legal y mediática contra Binance tiene un solo propósito: sentar jurisprudencia dentro de la anarquía e independencia que caracterizó al ecosistema cripto durante la última década.
De ahora en más, EEUU deja claro que cualquier actividad de cierta relevancia en este sector deberá tener su explícito consentimiento. De lo contrario, los martillos de sus juzgados y agencias federales caerán con fiereza.
