You need to love yourself 🫶
Surely you have heard this quote before:
"Comparison is the thief of joy" - Theodore Roosevelt
It's easy to focus on everyone else in the world and forget about yourself. Don't make that mistake. Another thing that can often lead to negative consequences is comparing the life of someone else's to your own. Sure, observation can be a good way to gain motivation or learn new things, but it's also a way to set yourself up on a trip down the path of self-hatred if you are not careful.
We all have different stories. Some of us are born into lives of wealth and freedom. Others are dealt a weak hand and must figure out how to dig themselves out of the hole they were unlucky enough to spawn in. There are rich and poor people that are both happy and sad. This means that ultimately it is up to you whether you want to love yourself and be happy no matter what.
Thinking about whether this or that is fair is just a waste of energy. You must adapt to the situation or work on finding a solution to the issue at hand. Sitting around sulking about a thing that you have no control over is not going to do anything good for you. In fact, the only thing that you really should have any control over is yourself.
Take this for example...
Say that one morning you get a raise at work and are making more money than you ever have before. Later that evening you get a text from a friend telling you he made four times your yearly salary last year. You have a choice. You can be happy for them and yourself. Or, you can transmute your good news into jealousy towards your friend. I think the better choice of the two is pretty obvious.
Another example...
You just purchased your first new car and although it wasn't the best one at the dealership, it's better than anything you've ever had in the past. You are proud to be the owner of such a fine machine. The first thing you do is go to your favorite restaurant in town and it is there that you notice multiple luxury cars parked out front that you know cost more than you make in a year. You could just appreciate the beauty of those cars like you do your own. Or, you could begin hating whoever it is that owns the car for no good reason. The choice again is in your hands.
This post isn't meant to tell you what to do, but more so what not to do.
Your happiness is the most important thing in life. If you're able to help others be happier along the way, that is great too. However, it's never going to be beneficial to let the wins or losses of somebody else bring you down.
Think about this the next time you begin to lose belief in yourself. It's all in the mind and you can make the choice to believe you are the best there ever was.
