We are having a cold spell here in the UK, but it is winter so it's as expected, we've had the first snow of winter and lovely fresh frosty mornings.
I managed to get out on my day off and thought I'd have a trip to Roche Abbey, one of my favourite local places and usually one I only go to in the summer, as you can't go into the grounds in winter months.
The drive down to the abbey is a very narrow single track road with the odd passing point, I was a little worried that it might be too slippery as one part of the road turns into a steep hill, thankfully the frost had cleared from that part down to the abbey.
As I go there, the mist in the distance looked beautiful lit by the sun, with only one person around it was perfect for photography, and I was also itching to get the drone up in the air too.
As I walked down the path, the frost was making everything look like it was frozen in time, I love these cold frosty mornings, the sun was just high enough to reach the top of the Abbey in the valley it's stood in since it was founded in 1175.
The light was absolutely beautiful, seeing the frost seeming to steam as the sun hit it, it certainly creates a fantastic atmosphere, what's best is that I had the place all to myself.
I absolutely love this view, with the partly frozen lake looking up the valley, the church you can see on the horizon is at Laughton and you can see this church from miles away, gorgeous architecture on that building and certainly a building I'm going to feature on a future post.
As I started to lose the feeling in my fingers due to the cold, I decided to land the drone and get my gloves on, it did turn a little bit too cool stood there but as I mentioned earlier, it is winter weather lol. I headed back to the car, but then as I was near it, there's a path you can take which sends you around the abbey and past the lake too, it is only a small lake, so maybe it's a large pond.
The pond was partly frozen, with the odd bird looking around for food, as you pass the pond there are some stepping stones, I headed over them although they were kind of slippy with the frost, thankfully I didn't fall in.
The sun had now risen well above the trees giving a lovely warm light now in the valley, the house at the entrance to the abbey is beautiful, I'd love to live here, the autumn and winter colours look beautiful as the mid winter comes around.
