Resident Evil 2 (PlayStation)

in #hive-140217last year

While Resident Evil may not technically be the first game to fit in the "survival horror" genre, it is responsible for the term being coined and would define what survival horror was moving forward. Being immensely popular, of course Resident Evil had a much anticipated sequel. Resident Evil 2 was released by Capcom for the PlayStation in early 1998.

The development of Resident Evil 2 was started only a month after Resident Evil was released and involved most of the same people. However, after the sequel was two-thirds complete, it was scrapped and they started over. They felt it wasn't good enough and its hard to argue against their decision as the final version was one of the most successful games of all time.

The actual game play of Resident Evil 2 wasn't really much different than the original other than a few tweaks and improvements. Like the first, you must explore the city solving puzzles and fighting zombies. One of the more unique aspects is the save system. There are certain rooms that have typewriters that allow you to save the game, however, it requires that you find a limited number of typewriter ribbons hidden throughout the game. I guess you could describe it as a real-time 3D puzzle/adventure game featuring zombies. Perhaps the biggest difference are the branching story lines. Resident Evil 2 has two playable characters, each with their own story. Additional scenarios can be unlocked for a total of four scenarios.

The plot picks up two months after the original game and most of the residents of Raccoon City have been turned into zombies. It features a new Raccoon City police officer in what is supposed to be his first day on the job and a college student trying to find her brother.

Resident Evil 2 was a massive success. It had very positive reviews everywhere it was reviewed. It had a huge advertising budget but also huge sales with over 6 million copies sold. It was ported to Windows, the Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, and GameCube. Since the release of Resident Evil 2 there have been well over a dozen sequels, spin-offs and remakes. Resident Evil 2 itself was remade in 2019 and released for the PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One with additional releases in 2022 for the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. If you have never played Resident Evil 2 then I think you should definitely check it out. And if you never played the first one you should probably start there. I'm not really familiar enough with the remakes to know if they are suitable substitutes for the originals. However, playing the originals is always nice to see what the big deal was then.

Oh buddy! you are touching nostalgia here! I played it (RE2) on N64 which was the only console I had and it was a total experience, I immediately became a fan of the saga, I bought the Dreamcast to play its continuation: RE - Code Veronica and then I bought the Gamecube to play it the Remake of the first game of the saga and the prequel (RE: Zero). In fact there are novelized versions of each game written by S. D. Perry I highly recommend them! Greetings.

I remember grabbing the long box version at a local Electronics Boutique, bringing it home and playing it. The second, I remember a friend at that EB calling me at my day job (before cell phones were overtly affordable) telling me they had it in, I asked him to set a copy aside for me and I grabbed it on my way home.

I lived about 2 hours out of town at that time so I had a long drive home to think about this game. It was at night too. I had seen videos and such at that EB on a demo kiosk and I followed the development in magazines like Gamefan so I was familiar with the story and scenarios awaiting me.

That was probably the longest drive of my life, other than when I came home from Marine Boot and drove that same route home to see my family again.

Ugh, the memories. I went ahead and cleared my schedule that weekend and played this non stop for an unhealthy amount of time.

I have the remake on Steam but have barely played it as life has been too hectic to sit down and focus on enjoying it. What a series.

It is one of my favorite sagas, I love it. However, my favorite games are 3 and 4.

It's an excellent game, even with the remakes, you can still find people playing the original version.
At the time, I had a good time playing with my cousin and my brother, the three of us played at the same time.
One managed the character, another solved the puzzles, and another remembered where the objects were.
It's kind of weird, but I wasn't going to play just that. It was a fun way to play.
