Kurz darauf postete Musk ein Meme aus der Serie „South Park“. „Auf der Suche nach dem Gold in Fort Knox“, steht in dem Post, gefolgt von „und es ist weg“ in dem Meme. Das Gold sei der Besitz des amerikanischen Volkes, ergänzte er in einem Kommentar. Und: „Ich hoffe, es ist noch da!“
Demnach lagern in Fort Knox aktuell rund 147,34 Millionen Feinunzen Gold. Das entspricht einem Buchwert von etwa 6,22 Milliarden US-Dollar. Wichtig dabei: Gerechnet wird nicht mit dem täglich schwankenden Marktpreis (aktuell rund 2911 Dollar), sondern traditionell mit 42,22 Dollar pro Feinunze.

According to this, there are currently around 147.34 million troy ounces of gold stored in Fort Knox. This corresponds to a book value of around 6.22 billion US dollars. Important: The calculation is not based on the daily fluctuating market price (currently around 2911 dollars), but traditionally at 42.22 dollars per troy ounce.
