Hello, beautiful people of HIVE, lately my life has been crazy with work and I haven't had enough concentration to sit down and write. But we are back, today I want to tell you about a little angel that came into my life, she is full of fur and has 4 paws. I have always been a person of having a furry at home, all of them have been adopted and as I mentioned in my introduction I moved from Venezuela to Argentina in 2016. It was very hard to separate from my cats and my dog, but unfortunately I could not bring them with me, they stayed in very good homes of friends who already knew them and to this day they send me videos and photos of them, they are super spoiled.

After 2 years here in Buenos Aires, in 2018, already stabilized we rented a very large apartment and my first need, having that space was I want a furry! And so the search began, I joined on Facebook a lot of adoption and rescue groups. I put in order the limitations, space, future moves, the amount of free time among other things and taking into account all this we drew a profile of more or less the type of puppy we could have. Adopting a pet is not something that should be taken lightly and much more when they are rescued and have been through a thousand things, beyond games and food, they often need professional psychological care and above all a lot of patience.

Adopting here in Argentina is not easy, first you go through an interview with the rescuer, then they verify if the space you have is optimal (if they visit your home) and finally you meet the furry, then the rescuer evaluates the behavior of the pet with the future adopters. If the adoption is positive, the rescuer carries a monthly visit regime for 3 months to observe the development of the new relationship and the adoptee's conditions. It is a long process, but I think it is great, because it ensures that the furry one will have a good home and will not go through the same thing again.

I asked for several puppies, who with good luck had a waiting list and were successfully adopted before I was able to meet them. When you start seeing furry dogs and reading their rescue stories you wish you had a giant house to adopt a few, or at least I feel that way, you read and read every story and it is difficult to understand how humans can do so much damage to a being that cannot defend itself, to a soul that only knows how to be grateful and give love, beyond the mischief they can do. There is nothing that justifies mistreatment.

¡me tiro a morder!

One day I received a call, it was my time to meet a little furry dog! He was a Cocker Spaniel and had been in adoption for 9 months. I don't really care about breeds, for me that's the least of it, but it did seem strange to me that he had been in adoption for so long. I arrived at the rescuer's house, I talked to her for a while, she asked me a lot of questions about what we were working on, what free time we had, she told me about the dog's personality, she told me that I had to be patient with him, that he was a sweetheart, but he had his things. About an hour later the girl told me: well, I'll bring him to meet him, but I ask you not to call him or pet him, let him approach you, I said ok no problem (she is the one who knows the dog and knows how he is) the dog comes in, a beautiful fat cinnamon colored dog.

After 15 minutes he comes up to me, sniffs me, climbs on top of me and that's when I pet him a little bit, the astonished rescuer tells me that he had never done that, point for me I thought, he got off, ate a cookie and went to do his doggy things, the girl and I kept talking. Here is where the part comes where everything starts to make sense, she tells me that Brunito (that was his name) had behavioral problems and was half bipolar and above all that he didn't get along with men, those things she never told me when we had the call, she also said that Bruno needed professional therapy, ok I had no problem with that, at that moment the chubby guy comes up to me and climbs on top of me I proceed to pet him and .... I started to bite! I picked up my hands and didn't caress him anymore.

At the end of the interview the girl tells me: well I think you are a candidate, I will be calling you, I answer her: give me a chance to talk to my husband, to tell him how Bruno is, because the decision is not only mine. My husband was on a trip and I had not been able to talk to him properly, and I receive the call that I am the adopter and that at that moment they were taking Bruno to me, I tell the girl to wait because I told you that I should talk to my husband first and he is on a trip, the girl got angry in an indescribable way, she told me that she was going to expose me in social networks and other things, I immediately called the other rescuer who worked with her and I told her everything, she understood the whole situation thank God.

I was really sorry for Bruno, because he was a little dog that needed a very quiet environment and super special care that I am aware that I could not give him, after all that I understood that they wanted to place him in a home, but his case was complicated. I really hope that Bruno has found his place in the world and that he is very well and happy.

I continued with my search, I had been looking for the new member of my family for 3 months, one day I saw in a group that was not of rescuers, a photo of a dog that had a look that I can not explain, sad, fearful, as empty and I asked for her. Carmen answered me that she was still in adoption and that when I could go to see her, I told her I could go tomorrow. I arrived at the meeting point and there she was, a little white thing with brown spots with her tail between her legs and trembling, we sat on a park bench and the dog got under my legs. Carmen told me that she was 11 months old, she had been rescued 3 months ago, from a place where she was kept locked in a laundry room of 1 meter x 2 meters all day long, among her own waste and that she was always beaten.

Carmen worked as a cleaner in the house where the dog was in transit, there were other dogs that did not let her evolve, so Carmen told her boss that she could keep her until she could find an adopter. I was already totally in love with the dog, I took a picture of her and sent it by WhatsApp to my husband, he replied, IT'S HER, IT'S OUR DOG!

That same day, October 13, 2018, katalina arrived to her new home. Why is she called katalina? I don't know, she already had that name and I didn't want to change it to make her adaptation less traumatic. She was a tiny little thing, super shy and nervous, I let her move around the room and she got into a corner of a space that was between the wall and the bed. I left her there for a while, prepared her bed in front of mine, gave her water and food. After a while I took her out of the corner, sat with her on the floor, put her on my lap and spent some time with her, caressing her and talking to her. Then I left her to see how she behaved, and she began to examine the whole house, she felt a little calmer. My husband came home from work and Katalina ran out and hid in the corner and started shaking again, I told him to let her process for a moment and after about 10 minutes I took her out of there, I approached my husband with her and told him to do the same thing I did, to pet her and talk to her. After a while she had calmed down and started walking around the house again.

That same day as it was still early, I took her out for her first walk, when we were coming back I noticed that she had already identified the way back home, she surprised me, she stopped right at the door and put her paws up on it. The truth is that she advanced very fast, I took her every day to the park and put her in the kennel to run, she was not very sociable with other dogs, it was a matter of constancy, until she already had her doggy friends and ran with them. At home she really behaved very well, only 2 times she took the garbage out of the kitchen, I grabbed her by the paws and we both picked up the mess she had made, while I told her, the garbage goes here not on the floor, now you are going to clean this up, but she never did it and another time she exploded her bed. Even for her needs when she didn't manage to take it out she was tidy, she never went all over the house, she chose a place that was perfect and only did her little things there.

I realized that I had adopted a super intelligent dog, you can't imagine how much, but there was still a problem, the contact with humans. When visitors came to the house she returned to the state of the first day, she ran and hid to shiver in the corner, little by little, with patience and without pressure she was approaching people. In January 2019, she was totally adapted, one day I decided to release her in the open park, something she loves is to run and the kennel was too small for her, and I had noticed that she was always watching where I was, so I released her. I felt her happiness to be able to run freely without a fence that was in the way, she ran everywhere, yes, she always turned to see where I was, I realized that there was no danger of her running away. When she is in the park she looks like a horse, she made a lot of friends, as I took her out more or less at the same time we always coincided with the same group of dogs among them a rescued greyhound also called Leia as the princess, she is the only one who beats her running to kata.

Katalina evolved quite fast, she was behaving great, she was already going out to receive visitors and to ask for cuddles, my god how she loves to be petted. One day my husband's orchestra mates went to rehearse (he is a musician) and suddenly I saw out of the corner of my eye that Katalina was limping and got into the famous corner between the wall and the bed, I called her and she didn't listen to me so I went to see what was wrong, To my horror her trunk was full of blood, I couldn't explain what had happened to her, I panicked, I checked her and her belly was purple too, then my husband looked out the window and the neighbors told him that she had been run over by a motorcycle. It turns out that the door had been badly closed and she got out, although she doesn't get lost, she doesn't have that cunning of other dogs with cars, she crosses and that's it, that's why I always take her on a leash and let her loose in the park. It was a drama that day, besides it was a holiday, to get a vet on duty, I called a lot until I found a 24/7 clinic, then I had to get a cab to transport her, I had put Kata in her bed and underneath I put a board so I wouldn't move her, I didn't know if she was hurt internally or if she had a fracture. We ordered 3 cabs, the last one was the one that accepted to take her without any problems, and was very attentive and attentive to Kata on the way.

We arrived at the clinic, and she was automatically admitted, the vet was great, he checked her, he told me that she was not fractured, the blood was coming from her upper lip, a fang was broken in half and that in turn broke her lip, kata was obviously in shock, her eyes were lost and she was panting, the vet explained to me that the first thing to do was to get her out of that state, so he took her an IV and put serum, in 15 minutes she had changed her appearance and she was back. The very attentive vet dipped a cotton ball in hydrogen peroxide and cleaned all the blood from her hair so that it would not stain. They sent her for an RX (they gave me the appointment for Thursday, all this happened on a Monday) and the next day I had to take her for a check up in the morning.

I watched her all night, I hardly slept, I got up, called the cab and took her. They began to check her and in the face of the vet (it was another one) I saw that something was not right, he asked me if they had sent her for X-rays and I told him that I had the appointment for Thursday, to which he answered me, we have to do the X-rays now! Kata had bilateral pneumothorax, this occurs when the air from the lungs leaks into the thoracic cavity, as the air accumulates there, the lungs expand less and less, causing lung collapse. In Kata's case it was a consequence of the blow, at that moment she was prepared, they cut the hair in the area of the lungs and made a thoracotomy, which consists of inserting a needle or catheter between 2 ribs and thus access the pleura and be able to extract the liquid and air accumulated in that area and avoid lung collapse. Kata behaved super well, it took about 25 minutes, the vets came out, they told me that everything was perfect and that if I wanted I could take her with me, but that I had to be very vigilant with any change in breathing or if she turned blue, take her immediately to the clinic, I decided to leave her hospitalized.

She was hospitalized for 48 hours, until finally on Thursday she was delivered to me, she was happy with spirits, sore, still limping a little, the treatment was antibiotics because she had wounds in her mouth and some scratches on her paws, painkillers and healing cream. She came home spoiled with chicken soup, rice and carrots, she recovered very fast. Luckily it wasn't more than a huge scare and it didn't happen, but it was extremely distressing.

COL 5.png

She is super quiet, but has a strong character, she does not like to be commanded, example: she knows how to give her paw, but if you ask her more than 3 times, she starts making noises as if she was going to talk to you, in fact, I feel that someday she is going to do it, because, although it sounds strange, you talk to her and she answers with grunts and small barks, she takes over the spaces and things. I have a sofa near the entrance of the house and in winter all the coats go there, in several opportunities I found the coats on the floor, I thought that she threw them and lay down on top of them, then I discovered that it was not like that, what she did was to vacate the furniture to sleep there. Of course, when she felt that we were coming, she got off the furniture, went to her bed and pretended that she was waking up, the coats on the floor and the furniture warm.

One fine day I woke up in the morning (we moved to a new apartment) and Kata was lying on the furniture, she turned to see me with a look of: this farce is over, I'm tired of pretending, I have always slept on this furniture and I will continue doing it whether you like it or not, I have no choice but to leave her alone, the furniture is hers. There is a corner of the room that she loves and when I place things in that space she sits down, stares at me and starts barking for me to vacate her corner. At one time she used to bite the hems of our pants and pull us, then she stopped that and started undoing braids, yes, whoever she was, she would undo the braids of everyone who came in. That also went away by itself.

With the food she makes me laugh a lot, because she is not like the common dog that asks for food and eats the ration, she starts to move the plate with her paw, if you do not pay attention she throws the plate further away and if you continue without paying attention to her, the show begins, she lies down with the plate between her paws and puts her trunk in, she stares at you with a face of: I don't get food, I'm going to die of starvation, seriously friends, the pitiful face he makes is amazing, after laughing I go and fill his plate, he comes closer, sniffs, grabs a single kibble and leaves. He definitely doesn't ask for food because he's hungry, it's because he doesn't like to see his plate empty, he eats a little bit during the day.

COL 6.png

She loves chicken, she goes crazy, ham, cheese, pumpkin and carrots, very occasionally I spoil her and give her a little piece of cheese or ham and prepare a little soup of rice, chicken and vegetables, I don't usually give her food, her basic diet is croquettes. His favorite toy is one I made him with old socks and rice, he loves it, in fact, the first one broke from having it here and there, I had to make him another one just like it and his tennis ball. He also has his scooby cookies that from time to time I give him, he specifically likes one brand, the others he doesn't eat, he plays with them and leaves them lying around.

Katalina has truly been a blessing, I can not imagine a better dog than her, intelligent, loving, educated and above all happy, I am very fortunate to have her, and thank God I can give her the dignified life and stability she deserves, after having lived everything she lived in that horrible place where she only received mistreatment.

If any of you, my friends who have read this story, are thinking of having a pet, I hope it will help you, both in the search and in the integration to the family.

We say goodbye Derly and Kata.
Thanks for reading!!!!
