Carhue is a town almost 520 kilometers west of Buenos Aires. It’s located by the lake called Lago Epecuén. So does another town called Villa Epecuén. When walking around the streets of Carhue, I came across this wall depicted the flood that caused the water level in the lake to rise 10 meters. Parts of Carhue was flooded, but all of Villa Epecuén was completely buried beneath water for 25 years. In 2010 the water started to withdraw, revealing the devastation caused by water.
This wall, kept in mostly black & white reflects what happened. The first paintings do indicate a happy scene by the lake. Water, boat, people bathing. This was before the flood. Lake Epecuén has a salt level that is 10 times higher than the sea. In the 1920’s Villa Epecuén was well known as a spa town visited by wealthy people from Buenos Aires. At the start of the wall, we can see the good times when Villa Epecuén and Carhue was prosperous towns.
This looks like a castle. I did not see the castle. Not in Carhue and neither in Villa Epecuén, but I did read about a castle. I don't know if it is still here, but I have a feeling it has been of some importance.
The flood caused enormous devastation. The landscape by the shores of the lake in Carhue has trees that looks dead, but still standing. This is also the case in Villa Epecuén.
When we drove the approx. 6 kilometers from Carhue to Villa Epecuén, the first building we encountered was the slaughterhouse – the “Matadero”. This building in Art Deco style is the also painted here on the wall. At the ruins, there is an information board with photos of what the building looked like before the flood. I think it was a building the inhabitants were proud of.
We had already been to the lake and Villa Epecuén ruins during the day. The wall with this street art was discovered when we were out for dinner the same day.
