There are sports that I've noticed that you don't see much in my city and skateboarding is one of those. I know it's an unconventional sport that is only practiced in greater volume in other parts of the world, like the US for example, but there was a time when the streets saw a lot of skateboarders, that was many years ago, but I clearly remember that it was kind of a fad. Many of my friends got into it, but they only did simple tricks and most of them gave it up after a few months, besides, injuries were the order of the day taking into account that when you are learning to skate it is very easy to fall.
Internationally, I don't remember any famous skateboarders from my country, but from my point of view that's quite normal since it's not even close to being one of the most practiced sports in Venezuela. However, I guess at some point the authorities decided to give a push to the skate culture and built this place. I don't remember when it was built, but I know it's been several years. Something that strikes me about this place is that even though it is one of the only places in the city for this type of activity, every time I pass by it is completely empty, so that confirms that it is not a sport that is in demand.
ACCESS
Going into the matter, the first thing I want to highlight about the “Skate Park Parque Olímpico Pedro Bastidas” is that it is built on the side of a very busy avenue of the city, this is the Avenida José Casanova Godoy. As far as access is concerned, it can be a bit complicated to get there since there is no parking and no public transportation, so a long walk is surely necessary to get there. As you can see in the photos, the accesses are at the ends of the park and can only be reached by walking.
CLIMBING
Before seeing the skater area, I want to show you a great wall that was built for climbing, it is quite high (I could not tell you the height) and is painted in a rather peculiar way, you can see that the triangles are fundamental elements in art. As it is normal in this type of structures, it has small protuberances so that the climbers can hold on and thus be able to climb. I must emphasize once again that the style of painting is one of the things that attracts the most attention and generates a good impression from a distance.
SKATE PARK
Now, the Skate park is quite large and is built entirely of concrete, I guess that makes it more durable taking into account that daily goes through quite strong weather conditions, the sun in this city can be overwhelming and the rains come without warning. In function to the above mentioned, the construction material is fundamental since normally the ramps are built in wood or hard plastic.
THE GREAT WALL AND EXERCISE AREA
Taking into account that the skate park is built on the side of the mountain, it was necessary to build a retaining wall, it is not as big as they usually are, but undoubtedly provides security to the structure. The wall is painted with what looks like hummingbirds in a very particular style. In addition, metal structures were added for exercises, which from my point of view are totally in keeping with the environment.
This is how I share with you another sports structure in my city that as I mentioned before are not abundant, but these are appearing sporadically as I explore places that I have not been to before. It was a pleasure to share, see you next time.
