Saludos mis estimados lectores, hoy quiero compartir con ustedes un maravilloso día que pase junto a mi familia en casa de un amigo, quien labora en uno de los oficios más añejos de mi querida Venezuela, la alfarería, trabajo que realizan con mucho amor y orgullo artesanos de mi región, en una zona conocida como “La Otra Banda”, personas quienes con su gran esfuerzo día a día hacen piezas maravillosas de barro y arcilla, para ser distribuidas a lo largo y ancho de nuestra geografía nacional.

Greetings my dear readers, today I want to share with you a wonderful day I spent with my family at a friend's house, who works in one of the oldest trades of my beloved Venezuela, pottery, work done with love and pride by artisans from my region, in an area known as "La Otra Banda", people who with their great effort every day make wonderful pieces of clay and mud, to be distributed throughout the length and breadth of our national geography.

Este trabajo de alfarería se realiza con materia prima propia de la región, ya que esta zona cuenta con un barro arcilloso especial para este trabajo, los trabajadores deben picar la arena fina, mezclarla con agua y hacer una especie de masa, la tapan con bolsas plásticas para evitar que le caigan algunas impurezas del ambiente y dejan reposar durante toda la noche.

This work of pottery is made with raw material from the region, since this area has a special clayey mud for this work, the workers must chop the fine sand, mix it with water and make a kind of dough, cover it with plastic bags to prevent some impurities from the environment and let it rest overnight.

Al amanecer vuelven a amasar para obtener el punto exacto, posteriormente buscan los moldes de las piezas que se quieran fabricar, los colocan en cenizas para evitar que la mezcla de barro se pegue a estos; igualmente le colocan cenizas al piso donde harán las piezas para recogerlas sin que pierdan su forma. Para la elaboración colocan el molde y van colocando un poco de barro y extienden bien con las manos, por ultimo pasan una especie de cepillo para retirar los excesos de la parte superior de las piezas, se deja secar a la intemperie durante todo el día y su noche, algo que sucede con facilidad ya que en esta zona el sol es muy fuerte por tratarse de una zona de clima xerófilo.

At dawn they knead again to obtain the exact point, later they look for the molds of the pieces that they want to make, they place them in ashes to avoid that the mud mixture sticks to them; they also place ashes on the floor where they will make the pieces to collect them without losing their shape. For the elaboration they place the mold and place a little bit of mud and extend well with their hands, finally they pass a kind of brush to remove the excesses of the upper part of the pieces, it is left to dry in the open air during the whole day and night, something that happens easily since in this zone the sun is very strong because it is an area of xerophilic climate.

Al día siguiente por la mañana se recogen todas las piezas, se colocan en grandes rumas para almacenarlas y posteriormente cuando ya tengan la cantidad requerida llevarlas al horno y cocerlas; al tener todas las piezas las colocan en el horno en orden, las mas pesadas van debajo ya que necesitan mayor calor, luego las menos pesadas y así hasta llegar a las mas ligeras que se cocinan fácilmente, es por eso que deben quedar en la parte superior del horno donde el calor es menor fuerte.

The next day in the morning all the pieces are collected, placed in large rumas to store them and then when they have the required amount, they take them to the oven and bake them; when they have all the pieces they place them in the oven in order, the heavier ones go below because they need more heat, then the lighter ones and so on until they reach the lightest ones that are easily cooked, that is why they should be at the top of the oven where the heat is less strong.

Valoro mucho este trabajo, porque de verdad que no es fácil, desde que se levantan a muy tempranas horas de la mañana y hasta altas horas de la noche deben estar al pendiente de los grandes hornos, donde cocinan las piezas artesanales de barro; al igual que sus piezas estos hornos son artesanales y elaborados por ellos mismos, para la cocción de las piezas estos hornos deben durar encendidos durante 6 a 8 días continuos, para su funcionamiento lo primero que deben tener en grandes cantidades es la leña seca, preferiblemente de cují (la mejor leña), un árbol muy común de nuestra vegetación xerófila, que da un excelente carbón muy duradero. Los horneros deben turnarse para introducir la leña en el respectivo horno y así vigilar que la llama nunca se apague o baje su temperatura, en caso de que esto suceda las piezas no tendrá la calidad requerida, ya que se podrían quebrar con facilidad.

I value this work very much, because it is really not easy, since they get up very early in the morning and until late at night they must be aware of the large ovens, where they cook the handmade clay pieces; Like their pieces, these ovens are handmade and elaborated by themselves, for the firing of the pieces these ovens must be lit for 6 to 8 continuous days, for its operation the first thing they must have in large quantities is dry firewood, preferably cují (the best firewood), a very common tree of our xerophytic vegetation, which gives an excellent and very durable charcoal. The ovens must take turns to introduce the firewood in the respective oven and thus watch that the flame never goes out or lowers its temperature, in case this happens the pieces will not have the required quality, since they could break easily.

Existe gran variedad de piezas que se fabrican en esta región del Municipio Torres, entre las mas conocidas tenemos; ladrillos pesados, cuñas, hexagonales, cuadrados, alfora, pequeños círculos y otros, los cuales son comercializados por metros cuadrados, existen viajeros de varias partes del país que compran grandes cantidades para revender. Estas piezas son muy buscadas por los amantes del estilo colonial, por otra parte son económicas, de excelente calidad y duraderas para espacios exteriores.

There is a great variety of pieces that are manufactured in this region of the Torres Municipality, among the best known we have; heavy bricks, wedges, hexagonal, squares, alfora, small circles and others, which are marketed by square meters, there are travelers from various parts of the country who buy large quantities to resell. These pieces are very sought after by lovers of colonial style, on the other hand they are economical, of excellent quality and durable for outdoor spaces.

En nuestra casa ademas de ser amigos de muchas personas de esta profesión, somos sus clientes, mi esposa y yo compartimos el gusto por este tipo de material, y porque me gusta apoyar el talento de nuestros artesanos, poco a poco en casa hemos realizado trabajos con estos materiales, muchas personas han quedado encantados con la calidad de las piezas, pronto les compartiré un proyecto que estoy realizando en casa.

In our house besides being friends of many people of this profession, we are their customers, my wife and I share the taste for this type of material, and because I like to support the talent of our artisans, little by little at home we have done work with these materials, many people have been delighted with the quality of the pieces, soon I will share a project that I am doing at home.
