Play to Earn Crypto Games: Are they Still a Thing?
Image created with Canva
The world of crypto gaming is now very different from those golden days of Axie Infinity, when even news headlines on social media were swarming with stories of players quitting their jobs to earn a living out of their pets and racing games. But still, there is some positive development in the play-to-earn niche, but very quietly.
Now, let's go back to the end of 2021: this was the most enthusiastic moment of the crypto world. Do you remember how people were earning decent returns on those digital ponies and racing horses of Pegaxy. It sounds almost unbelievable, but people from the developing world earned more from this than their actual jobs: it was a gold rush for sure, except this time the pans and picks were substituted with NFTs and pixels.
It would seem the cold hard reality came crashing when those Ethereum gas fees gouged everyone’s profits. It was also painfully apparent that getting started was practically going to cost a small fortune. Furthermore, when the crypto market fell out, those fantastic dollar signs weren’t looking so beautiful anymore. As usual, the media shifted focus to whatever was trending, and it left us contemplating if the boom was over.
This brings me to my next point. Some games didn’t just survive. They flourished. One great example would be Splinterlands, a card game based on the Hive Blockchain. Every month they are still pulling in over a million in transactions. What’s more funny is that this incredible feat was achieved in a so-called “dead’’ industry.
Remember when everyone else drowned out, Splinterlands didn’t. They built a game on blockchain technology that didn’t cost an arm and a leg to play. With over 50,000 daily players on the Hive blockchain, things are certainly looking promising.
Once again new games are getting their dose of this formula. The next big one is Holozing, which is being developed on the Hive blockchain. It’s basically a classic type of game, but you are actually able to earn with it, which is awesome.
Play to Earn games are evolving, not dead. The insane hype of 2021 is a thing of the past, and having no hype may be a good thing. At least we do not see get rich quick schemes anymore, but rather games people actually enjoy which in turn help them make some money while having fun.
Perhaps in 2025 we should be expecting the next boom, this time even AI having its share of the gaming industry helps. But one thing guarantees: as long as games like Splinterlands keep their players satisfied, and fresh ideas from new games such as Holozing are introduced, play to earn gaming is here to stay. range 10-20
So if you are looking forward to entering the world of play-to-earn games, it would be best to think out of the box. Consider these other platforms with less fees, Hive Blockchain being one of them. The ultimate point which often gets lost is that a good game is one you enjoy regardless of the monetary rewards it offers. The reward is merely icing on the cake.
