Cormoran Strike: A Modern British Detective TV Show (My Review)

Hello friends!

Another interesting TV show that I watched over the last weekend, taking advantage of some free time to rest, the perfect time to watch another series, and this time with suspense and mystery! And when the Sanremo Festival was finally over, but that's another topic. I'm here to share my opinion on a TV show that I liked, a suspense and detective series, and it's English, but it's not Sherlock Holmes, but a more modern one, but very "British".

And what TV show am I talking about? This TV show is called C.B. Strike, although in Spain the title is Cormoran Strike directly, and it's available on HBO MAX.

Let's tell something about this:

What is this about?

This is about a detective in London, Cormoran Strike, who was a soldier in Afghanistan and lost a leg. He has had some tough times, because he is also the son of someone important who has never paid much attention to him. He got away from it all, and rebuilt his bucolic life with a detective agency, and as he needed someone to help him, he hired Robin, a very motivated person who decided to leave her previous life to become a detective, and wanted to learn from the best.

Together they investigate the cases that come to them, they hire them and they investigate, monitor and interview. They always get along well with the police, with whom they sometimes collaborate. And sometimes they also infiltrate the cases themselves to discover more, especially Robin, less known and who disguises herself by acting and pretending to be others.

The characters

The main characters are Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott, played by Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger. Both are great actors and they show it, they have a special touch. I think she is very pretty and plays a good role, she starts out without knowing anything about the job but with all the motivation to want to leave her boring job and previous life to become a detective, which is what she wanted.
And Strike, very experienced although always somewhat melancholic, helps her, he realizes her talent, how well she investigates, and how involved she is and he has no choice but to make her his invaluable partner, he realizes that she is better, that both complement each other well and both become better detectives.

And clearly both of them are the main characters, Cormoran and Robin, who end up having a close friendship. Maybe they always had it from the beginning, but they are not completely honest, and there are also some personal misunderstandings, you know, the typical chemistry between characters... will something happen? We don't know.

But there are also more characters, besides those who appear in each case, we have the policeman who helps them or who they help, the secretary they hire in the detective office, and another detective who they also hire for surveillance mainly. There are not many other characters but little by little others appear who form their circle around them...

Anything else to comment?

Very British atmosphere
One of the things I like the most is the British atmosphere. London, a city that we know, and that we see reflected in all the episodes as if it were another actor. In the images we see that rainy London, the pubs where they have a beer, the guitar shop, the red buses, the phone booths, and those buildings and monuments so London style. And even, the English countryside can be seen in some moments when they go out of the city.
Everything has that air, that scenery, that character and that specific style, so British characteristic but currently. You can see it in every detail, and that is what makes it different.

Based on mystery novels
All these chapters are based on several novels.
In fact, each novel usually takes up several chapters, which are divided into parts 1, 2, etc. and sometimes even 4, making it an independent season. This happens for example in the last season, the fourth season, where the four chapters were the four parts into which the novel of the same name was divided: "The Ink Black Heart".

As the posters say, the episodes of the TV show are based on novels by J.K. Rowling but written for TV by Robert Galbraith. And since the series began in 2017-2018, they have captured several novels in the TV series, each one has been an investigation that has taken them several chapters:

  • The Cuckoo's Calling
  • The Silkworm
  • Career of Evil
  • Lethal White
  • Troubled Blood
  • The Ink Black Heart. (This is the last season that I have been watching recently, the last weekend).
The investigation is about the death of a girl who created a popular video game that was going to be made into a movie, there are many people who could be involved...

I have been telling so much. There are 4 seasons so far, and watched all of them now! Take a look at it!
