"Sound of Freedom " released on July 4, 2023, was directed by Alejandro Monteverde. I will now state my critical opinion about the film based on my personal opinions. My intention is not to throw hate at it or anything like that. So first of all I apologize if it bothers you when I say that it is a little boring or that I don't like it that much. Everyone is a world apart and thinks differently.

Propaganda also exists in art. So I judge it as I see it. I judge it on its merits. But when you remove the context of all the outside noise surrounding it, I think "Sound of Freedom " is not particularly interesting to talk about. And again, looking at it from my experience, I didn't get much out of it as a viewer. And that saddens me 😢, because it's not an offensive film, far from it, nor is it poorly made. It's just that it's a subject that would mean a lot to me if a great filmmaker and a great crew could get together and do it justice to really understand the tone they need to convey. You know, a great filmmaker who is able to give it the gravitas that it deserves. And I think there will be those who will disagree with the tone of the film. When you reflect on a subject like this, your natural inclination is to think, oh, this is going to be like a documentary or like, you know, like a docudrama. It's going to have gritty realism and that sort of thing. But no, this movie is trying to be a piece of entertainment that's engaging on that basic level.

The film tells the story of Tim Ballard's attempts to save a child from child traffickers. And yes, the film has a noir thriller feel to it that engages the audience. But, unfortunately, I think the film is very poorly constructed as a narrative. And I feel it is in desperate need of an editor. I suppose there are two things they could have done. They could have cut about 20 minutes out of it and made it a more compelling thriller, or I think you could fill those 20 minutes with something more interesting, fill it with real content with depth and complexity of characters so that we had something to chew on besides the bone.

I think there are already a lot of copycats out there, and if you're going to go down that road, you have to commit to the tone and a lot of the themes that are addressed. Unfortunately, I don't feel like this film understands those themes or is capable of taking those creative risks. It really feels like an effort to get through and look good. Although it improves tremendously in the second half of the film, in terms of experience and pacing, it's still incredibly uneven. One of the big problems for me is that the main character is really uninteresting in my opinion. It's like he has a family, but we don't get a sense of that family life. He has a wife, but she's just there in the background.

Crossing barriers, making friends in places he normally wouldn't in order to get close to people he would never normally be close to. And I start to feel more of that danger and that risk, but it's more in the second half of the movie.

We need to understand their inner experience, and we don't. Every scene here is very basic in terms of the writing, so much so that it seems boring. And the lead actor, his face, has this worn sadness, but it borders on sentimentality. And it seems a little excessive to me to be the audience surrogate. It seems like every scene basically has one thing in mind, the process and the transition section of the scene and then the payoff. Obviously, that's important in every scene as a screenwriter, but there has to be a lot more to it. There has to be layers so that, it's not so cut and dry. There's no invisibility in terms of the functionality of these scenes. I didn't love the performances in the scenes. There were a couple of performances that stood out for me, several actually. The young woman who is held captive, I thought she was very strong. She had a really powerful and haunting face that resonates throughout the film.

But yes, unfortunately, that's really all I have to say about the film as far as things I like about it. I think the intensity of a subject like this deserves the utmost respect from the artist. And when you can do that, you can really strike a chord with people. And I don't want to say that this movie didn't strike a nerve with me. It obviously did. A lot of people are seeing it and it's certainly generating its good and bad reviews. But I think it has more to do with the noise surrounding it and the politics than the actual quality of the material. And I would prefer the material to be powerful and touch a nerve in people as an artistic experience, because that's the kind of thing that lingers in people's minds. That's the kind of thing that's remembered for years and years. It's not just about the immediate marketing noise, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be marketed and you can be as creative as you want to be with marketing.

I don't think heart is enough when it comes to bringing a story to life creatively. But again, I see no reason to be offended by this film. It's just a bit boring. It's a struggle just as an artistic piece of expression, as a piece of artistic propaganda or whatever. And I reckon they're really going to have to start making changes, thinking differently. Now, if the controversy surrounding this film piques your interest and you want to see what all the fuss is about and why people are going so crazy, well, go ahead and experience it for yourself.
