People drink a lot of things from Rockster, to Coffee, Red Bull, Diet Coke, and a lot of liquid mixture and they all have one aim, to be extremely active. You will see these people in parties, clubhouses, and even in offices. It looks like everyone is glued to the world's psychoactive drug caffeine and people pay premium to get that espresso coffee than they would pay for gas of equal amount.
When people go for days without this psychoactive drug, they appear to be anxious, irritable, and have headache. Caffeinated products are tasty or they have great taste but caffeine itself is a Bitter, white, powdery alkaloid and if you want to be able to differentiate between the taste, take two coca-cola, one caffeinated and the other with no caffeine and you will see the difference in taste.
About 80% of the world's population consume caffeine and this alkaloid is extracted from either coffee, tea, or other natural sources like Guarana, and Yerba Matte. There is a high chance you have heard one of the four names I mentioned with the first two being very common and the third and fourth always an addictive to energy drinks and sport drinks. People from Nigeria, other West and Central African country would eat Kola nut very well for its stimulating properties and even without knowing much about it, our fathers like it.
Caffeine known chemically as 1,3,7 - Trimethylxanthine does this great wonders by basically performing a trick on the brain. It causes the brain to assume that you are not tired when actually you are tired. It does this perfectly because it is similar to a molecule in the body known as Adenosine. When Adenosine binds with the Adenosine receptor in the brain, it affects the entire nervous system, telling the brain that you are worked out and you are tired with need to rest. When the brain gets this information, you start to feel sleepy and off you go to the bed so as to rest.
With caffeine presence in the body, it goes to the brain to block the Adenosine receptors before the molecule adenosine reaches there, so the body doesn't get the signal that your body is tired and so stays in an awake state. Instead of the body to go into a tired and sleeping state, caffeine gets the body to be alert leading to increase in heart rate, blood pressure, alertness, and delayed fatigue onset.
This alertness peaks 30 minutes after consuming it, and it begins to diminish till it reaches its half life at 6 hours and so people just tend to drink more so they can continue to experience the same level of alertness throughout the day. With this increased reason and urge to drink caffeine, it brings the question if caffeine is addictive and the answer is Yes but like the addiction that you know. While caffeine will keep you stick to it, going cold turkey on it or abruptly stopping its use will not give you the withdrawal symptoms like drugs such as heroine, and nicotine.
Withdrawals can come with headaches, being cranky, irritation, and feeling tired but in a day or two days, the body will adjust itself to normal. Some people still agree that taking caffeine is a dedicated act to an addictive one and currently it doesn't pose a threat to the society unlike nicotine, cocaine, and other addictive drugs, moreover it doesn't activate the brain reward system like these drugs do.
Doctors say that 400 milligrams of caffeine is still safe for a healthy adult and that is roughly about 16 ounces cup of coffee to meet up. Energy Drinks like RED BULL contains 80mg of caffeine, so if you are till taking your regular 1 or 2 cups or cans, you are safe at least for now until science says otherwise.
