Cause They Told Me To

The mob has no leader. It has someone orchestrating what direction it takes but rarely anyone stopping to think for second about why a certain course of action should take place. Once we plug in to the mob mindset we voluntarily give up our ability to form independent thoughts and just go with the flow of whatever we're told. Sometimes I wonder why this has exploded to the level that we currently see. Maybe it is because we're just very comfortable being told what to do rather than the effort and potential exposure that independent thought demands.

What even is independent thought? Sometimes it seems like we're all influenced in one way or the other by others. Social acceptance is one of our fundamental needs as humans, so most of us tune our thoughts in ways that make us more acceptable to the groups we fall under. If you're conservative leaning, there are certain things you aren't allowed to disagree with, same thing for the liberal front. Choosing to cherry pick from both sides publicly likely won't end well. I mean there are independents even in the political space, but we see just how it pans out for them on the power front.

We all have our leanings, and perhaps we should act on them so we can increase the probability of finding like minds. Like minds are the most effective ways of creating change. Simply because what one person can do is very limited. But I think we should be quite weary of what we have to sacrifice just to be accepted by our preferred groups. Also we need to constantly ask ourselves whether we're achieving the collective aims we desire from those groups. Then there's also the option of simply choosing to remain passive to it all. A lot of people, and maybe an increasing number are simply playing an observer role in society these days, holding strong opinions but rarely commenting.

Whatever we ultimately choose to do remains at our discretion. It is easier to simply be shown a path to follow, but let's be well aware that the mob has no feelings and will turn its back on those who fail to serve its purpose.

The 21st century is probably a place of influence, we're mostly pushed or motivated by something.

It's funny how easily we follow the crowd without questioning why. Independent thought feels rare yet vital.

Nothing is quite as terrifying as the mob mentality, as people lose their ability to think rationally. It can be witnessed most directly during riots, and sporting events. But it can also happen when enough people are put into a fearful state, like when covid happened.
