I had cause to use my downvote button for the very first time ever Just a few hours ago. It was a comment on my last post that talked about getting free Hive or something with a link. I didn't need anyone to tell me it was a scam, and seeing it left my quite irritated. Down voting might not do much but it was the only reaction I could muster.
As obvious as it was to me, I have come to realize that a few people will likely fall for it and have their accounts hacked. This is a problem, as I can't imagine someone who has invested time, money and effort on this platform simply robbed of their assets just like that.
That is why settings such as account recovery is important. That way we won't lose everything at the very least, even if we lose something. Plus having the majority of our assets powered up is still one of the best security measures the Hive chain can offer. Before the thieves are able to breakthrough, we'd have recovered our accounts.
Prevention though is still the best form of defense. We must be more aware that with greater control in the Web3 era also comes greater risks and hence, need for greater protection. Some People are already going through great lengths to ensure security of their accounts and I think at some point everyone should follow suite.
There are for instance paid installations that provide added layers of security to our accounts. While we don't have to take drastic actions immediately, there are some things we can do to reduce our chances of falling victim now. I think the two most important are as follows: stay informed and do not get greedy.
It is better to be paranoid that to be relaxed when it comes to security matters and let our guard down. On the web, we must know that there are always people on the prowl looking for ignorant and greedy victims to take advantage of. Sudden disasters can be prevented by actions as basic as steering clear of links that we don't trust, or appear too good to be true.
Conclusion
As Hive becomes more popular, security breaches will likely increase. We need to be constantly on guard because no-one wants to see years of building lost like that to thieves and scammers. One of the ways we can actively confront this is by a community led sensitization effort, some of which I can already see going on.
