End of Year Planning

in #poblast year

This month has been extra busy with client work, which is great because that means there is work to be had. It's also challenging because normally at this time of the year things quiet down between Christmas and New Year's Day, but this year there is no slow down in sight.

I'm grateful for the fun and interesting projects working with a fabulous team. So, to wind down from the year and invest some time to plan for the coming year, I've made some of those preliminary plans in small bite-sized moments in time. Writing things down and talking them through with my family.

I will have a total of two days I can dedicate to myself which means I'll need to be laser focused. I feel like I've done some good initial prep work to make the short window of time fruitful.

I like to tack legal paper to the wall and use sharpies to visualize my ideas. There is something tactile about paper and pen...or in this case marker. Writing it out and then standing there thinking through what I've written goes a long way toward breakthrough.

Sure I could do this online or digitally, but I guess I'm old-school. It works for me. Once I have the broad plan on paper, then I'll shift to digital/online. Which makes sense since I grew up in a world before household computers.

What about you? Do you have a tradition of setting time aside at the end of the year to unwind and get ready for the coming year?

Absolutely agree with you on the power of planning with paper and pen. There's something about the tactile experience of writing that makes the process more engaging and effective. It's as if the act of writing physically imprints the tasks on my mind, making them more tangible and manageable.

In my case, I find that my planning process is ongoing and dynamic. It's not a one-and-done deal, but rather a constant cycle of writing, reflecting, adjusting, and rewriting. This iterative process helps me stay on top of things and adapt to changes as they come.

And yes, when I neglect this process, I can feel the difference. Things start to feel chaotic and overwhelming, like I'm losing grip on my world. It's a bit like trying to juggle too many balls at once — the moment you lose focus, everything starts to fall apart. This can lead to a lot of anxiety and stress, which is why I try to make a point of sticking to my pen-and-paper planning routine.

Even with AI, digital productivity tools are the second step once the real thinking is done.

In the end, it's all about finding what works for you and sticking to it. It seems that the old-school method of pen and paper does the trick. It's simple, effective, and doesn't require a battery charge or Wi-Fi connection.
