Incompetency (Or Stupidity), Once Again

in #hive-126152yesterday

Usually I don't complain in my posts as life is difficult as it is, don't want to burden anyone with negative posts, but sometimes things happen and cases stuck in my head for hours, like this one I'm going to share with you today.

We live in an era, where the way products are reaching the final customer is changing with a breakneck speed. The reasons is to make shopping easier, as well as reduce costs, just to name a couple. What seemed unimaginable a decade or two ago is maybe outdated already today, because something new had just been implemented to replace the old method, but serving customers the old fashion way is still available here and there, in some countries more than in the others.

20230308_131302a1.JPG

When shopping, I usually go for pre-packaged food, for a good reason, but sometimes I have no choice, but to go to the sales personnel to get what I want.

Last week I needed cottage cheese, because I wanted to bake a cake and the cheese you get in packs is so wet that it's basically useless for baking. As it's not the first time I need cheese for baking, I have a place where they are selling the preferred quality cheese, but they get it in big buckets and you have to ask them to serve you.

So I approached the lady and said I need 250g of cheese. She picked up two plastic boxes of different sizes and asked me which one I want. This was the moment when I started to roll my eyes because stupid questions are annoying, but I took a deep breath, decided to be polite and said I don't know, don't have the experience to know in which box 250g cheese would fit, letting the lady know politely that she should know, she is paid to make this decision, not me.

20230308_131319aa.JPG

She picked up the bigger one and put a big spoon of cheese in it. When I saw how much she took out of the bucket, knew right away that it will be too much, but again, I'm not the one who's selling cheese, I have no experience, so I kept my mouth shot. She places the box on the scale and boom, the scale showed 530g. Reminder, I asked for 250g, so the quantity was more than double.

Next, she looked at me, waiting for me to make a decision, which was funny as the quantity she had in the box was more than double of what I asked, you don't have t be a genius to notice that. I told her I need 250g. She then took out some and put the box back on the scale, but it was 380g, still more than I needed. She looked at me again and asked me if it's ok. I took another deep breath and told her it's not ok as I asked for 250g.

What happened next is something that would have never crossed my mind. She told me, I should have asked for the smaller box, not the big one. WTF!!!?? Her remark left me speechless for a moment, but it was too much for me and decided to speak up, so I told her I didn't choose the box, she did, because I don't have experience, she has (or should have).

20230308_131850a1.JPG

The next obvious move (in my eyes obviously) would have been to take some more out of the box, till it reaches the quantity I asked for, but that's definitely not what happened. She took the small box, started to transfer some of the cheese to the small box and while she was doing it, she told me that the plastic box weighs too, and that she knows it because she used to work at a pastry shop and they needed to weigh the boxes before filling them with biscuits and other stuff.

I was just standing there, looking at her shocked, thinking "really"? I wanted to tell her that if she used to work with these boxes, she should know how much a box weighs as sure as hell it's not 280g, the surplus the scale showed the first time, but decided to keep my opinion to myself this time. So I finally got the quantity I asked for, or close to it as it was still more, but was glad I finally got my cheese.

On my way home I was thinking, how the hell can people like her fill this position when they have no clue about how to serve clients and how the hell can that shop survive as losing customers with services like her provided must be on a daily bases.

I didn't understand why she transferred the cheese to the small box. The big box was already wasted, you cant give it to another customer, so why waste another one? Unless she was afraid of getting in trouble for not knowing which box to use, as the cashier could still see the box, when I paid.

Now, after reading what I wrote above, you may think this is just another tantrum to get some attention and play the victim, as so many are doing it here on a daily bases, but trust me, it's not.

If you can see past this event and see what is going on, on a bigger scale, you get shocked. Workers have been complaining about losing jobs because apps are taking over. This is a never ending discussion with pros and cons, but when you come across workers like her, you wish you could just take a box off the shelf, scan the code, pay and leave.

20230308_131000(0)a.JPG

I left not just disappointed, but angry as well as I can't understand how can someone be so ignorant, but the biggest problem is, I am firmly convinced the minute I turned my back to her, she started blaming me for what happened. An even bigger problem is, she's not the only one in this situation. There are millions, literally, who can't keep up with life and are just ping-ponging between jobs, complaining about low wages.

I'm not going to penalize the grocery shop for this, although I should, for keeping incompetent people on the job, but I'm going to penalize her for sure. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know how to execute a simple task like this, even without experience.

In a sense I'm glad we get a lot of the shopping part automated and we also have online shopping, that not only saves us from dealing with incompetent people (to some extent), but also saves us time. It is true, many are going to lose their jobs over time as AI takes over, but this is a process you can't stop as it's happening.

The flowers are very beautiful. I also like flowers. But I can't take care of flowers well.

Yes, these were spectacular.

I'll try to add a little - in Russia I encounter this every day. These degenerates are from 18 to 30 years old. The younger, the dumber. I suspect that this is the dumbing down of humanity not only in Russia but also in other countries. After 30, these people will occupy some kind of leadership positions and that will be the worst trash.
You treated her quite gently. Usually I deliberately ask questions that baffle them, with the subsequent lead to the fact that they are idiots. But even this they do not always understand)) Yes, there is smart, advanced educated youth, but this is very little. The Internet and gadgets hook them by instincts and completely block the brain centers (I don't remember what they are called). In general, we will not be bored for the next 30 years - it will be a lot of fun!
!PIZZA

To be honest, I know very little about life in Russia, for the obvious reasons, but I am not glad to hear you too (and so many in your country) have to face this on a daily bases. Looks like there's a segment like this in every country and I suspect the situation is even worse in less developed countries.

I choose to be gentle with her, because this is a shop where I do my shopping on a daily bases and I didn't want her to remember me but I'm dam sure I'm not going to buy anything from her ever again. Better walk 20 minutes and go to the other shop.

In an ideal world, everyone should evolve both professionally and on a personal level, but I have the feeling some people are going backwards after graduating from high school.

Yesterday I ordered 3 x fish and chips and thought noting of it and left to do some shopping and returned on my way back to the car. When I got home I had one piece of fish and 3 portions of chips. Problem is businesses employ idiots and it will cost them as I will never return again. I phoned today and spoke to the manager and it tuned out the one I was swearing off about was his brother.

😂 I know it's sad because it shows how ignorant they are, but can't stop laughing, when imagining your face, when you saw what you got. I think some people are just useless. Brother or not, if they are not suitable for the job, then ...

They simply don't listen and don't think! I've seen it here as well - they ask you a question which you answer - then ask the same question again, I mean, I wasn't whispering when I answered, she could have seen my lips moving if she hadn't heard!
I would have loved to be a fly on the wall and see your reaction when she dumped the cheese into the smaller container, and add insult to injury to tell you the container has weight, really!

They simply don't listen and don't think!

That is very true. Most of them are burnt out and not interested in pulling themselves together, while others are just dumb.

Haha, better not as you'd have been shocked. I'm not nice most of the times, when I'm in a similar situation.

Yes I understand that they are not happy in their jobs. I think not one of us will react kindly to that kind of service.
I meant to tell you about the most amazing cashier I've ever met. Young guy, works in a health and beauty retailer chain store. He always is smiling, greets one as if you're someone special, and he's like that with everyone! Such a breath of fresh air, I told him one day how I appreciate his excellent service and happy persona. His smile became bigger, a real diamond, don't get many like that!
Have a wonderful Tuesday @erikah!

Awww, how sweet! I love it and am glad you have such a wonderful cashier to deal with. It's a very good feeling and rare too.

I have one myself, a lady close to retirement, at the dairy shop, where I buy cheese, butter and what not. She's so sweet with almost everyone, except the grumpy and rude. I love her, she always calls me sweetheart, lovely and so on. Plus she is always offering their products, like every seller should.

I'm wishing you a wonderful evening dear Lizelle!

Sounds like she hates her job. Or hates people. It's a shame because at the same time someone really nice and competent is probably without a job. Someone who would deserve it better.

That is the sad part. Those who are professionals and are really meant to do this job, most likely have no place because of the ignorant.

Sadly, intelligence seems to be taking a hit these days. Between the people who don't want to work, the ones that don't know how to work and the ones who exhibit disdain toward their customers or their tasks, consumers are the ones losing out. It doesn't speak well for things going forward, does it?

consumers are the ones losing out.

Exactly! They need to understand that the customer is paying their wages and the quality of services provided reflects in the business's profit.

Yes sometimes we like to be automated, but when that happens they will lose their jobs. However, if you are in a condition like yours then it is automatically an option. You are a patient person @erikah. Many things will happen if this situation occurs to impatient people.

Unfortunately, some people deserve to lose their jobs.

Sometimes I am patient, other times I am less patient, but overall, no one should be put in this position. Life is difficult as it is, we don't need incompetent people treating us like she did.

I can't quite agree, the quality of people largely depends on those who employ them. I worked in the building materials trade for many years. So the customer naturally expects the salesman to be able to give expert advice. I had a background in construction, I knew the materials, and over time I gained several dozen customers who came exclusively to my shift to shop and for advice. I loved the job. Even if it wasn't easy. When I asked for a raise after 15 years, I was fired for redundancy within half a year.

I had a year until retirement, so I kind of stuck it out on part-time jobs and then went into that retirement. After about a year, I needed something and went to the store to buy the thing. I didn't know where it was stored in the store anymore, so I asked the clerk, who didn't know that I used to work there. I was quite surprised that the little man started to run confusedly between the shelves looking for the thing. Then he read the instructions on the packaging to see if it was what I was looking for.

When I asked friends who worked in other departments there about it, they told me that the new employees are all like that. The company doesn't want to pay people who can do something because they think they want too much money.

The fact that the quality of service is then trivial is obviously of no interest to them. I guess that's my experience

I can't quite agree with you either, because it's true, every employer is looking to get cheap labor and the cheaper, the dumber (no offense), but in the same time, imagine this woman has to do this every single day, several times. If one time goes wrong, next time she can start with a smaller quantity and add more, till she gets to the quantity needed. I mean you can learn on the go and do better next time.

Another thing that is a no brainer as I said, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know, blaming the customer is the worst thing you can do in this business, especially if what happened is your fault. These people could evolve and make progress every day, but for some reason they chose not to.

Anyway, congrats to you for what you have achieved in your field of work and I'm sorry to read that you got fired for asking for a raise, especially so close to retirement. Some people have no heart and your boss is one of them. We live in a cruel world.

Thanks for the valuable comment!

Not at all do I think you are playing victim. Sometimes we need to vent out stupidity of others. You showed a lot of patience dealing with this incompetent individual. I don't think I would have been so nice. Like you said it's not rocket science and I can't help to think why she didn't just complete a very simple task. Even if she was new is no excuse.

Oh yes automation is very much happening whether we like it or not. Maybe one day we will be happy with its service. Time will tell and hope it helps more than it hurts.

I had to swallow my anger or frustration, because this shop is close to where I live and have to come here every week, so I didn't want to cause a scene this time, but otherwise, in another shop, I may have not been so nice.

Oh yes automation is very much happening whether we like it or not. Maybe one day we will be happy with its service. Time will tell and hope it helps more than it hurts.

Trust me, cases like this makes me appreciate packaged food and automated services. if I do something stupid while scanning the codes, I have myself to blame and not get angry at some incompetent people.

Your right automation is welcome when we run into situations like you mentioned. I think we all have run into something similar to what you have. The last time for me was when I was at a restaurant. I asked for ice water and than the waitres asked if I wanted ice in it. I just simply laughed and said yes instead of challenging her intelligence 😆 I couldn't be mean or say something like an insult because I hadn't got my food yet, right?

😆🤣 Looks like we all get our fair share. Imagine taping these events and putting together a full movie. I think it would be a fun thing to do. But jokes aside, I don't know where these people put their brain.

untitled.gif

the seller's behavior would have annoyed me a lot too, my husband would have argued about it, that is, you get a box that's too big for 250 grams and then you want to convince me to take more fodder and you also want to make me feel guilty because you change the box? what an ignorant person, probably trying to convince you to take more product anyway.

what an ignorant person, probably trying to convince you to take more product anyway.

This is when I refuse to take more, even if it's 5g! Because it annoys me. There was one time when I asked for 150g of ham and the person serving me got 290g sliced and asked me if it's ok. That is almost double of what I asked and they still think it's ok.

Again, common sense. If you don't know how much to put in the box or how much to slice, you take one slice, place it on the scale and see how much it weights. Then calculate how many slices you need in total, even if you need to use a calculator. It is that simple.

Incompetence at her job and her nonchalant attitude. People like that need to be out of a job to understand how things are meant to be done. When you are in charge of something, you are meant to execute it to the fullest. That's how things are done.

Sorry you had to go through that stress. I understand you because I have been in certain situations myself. I truly hope people get to understand.

I couldn't agree more! These people will never learn anything if this kind of behavior is tolerated.

They need to understand that the customer is paying their salary and not the other way around.

Yes, they won't learn, or they may end up crying instead of looking back to access their actions and putting themselves in the same shoe as the customer.

Exactly.

I began ordering and pick up service for my groceries two years ago to avoid the crowds and cashiers at the stores. It was the best decision I made to reduce the stress in my life.

Thanks for sharing your story. Take care.

I am ordering groceries online as well, but it's not a smoothly working service either. There were times when they delivered me a totally different product, then there were products missing, so ... nothing is perfect.

Have a nice day/evening!

So sorry to hear your hiccups. I've had no problems with my local grocer, HEB. The only thing I complained about was the expiration date on the items given. If I shop inside, I'll reach back on the shelves or in the coolers and search for a longer date. I think it may be their policy though.

The one thing I don't order is my fresh meat. I like to choose that myself after receiving an item that expired within 2 days of bringing it home. That's one thing you can't control is you don't know something is wrong until later. But I haven't experienced any item missing. 🤞

I appreciate the engagement. Take care.

I suppose in time, these problems will disappear as the tendency is get most of the things delivered and the company that offers the best service will win customers over, but that's not going to be today or tomorrow, especially in my country. This is why I only order products that you can't go wrong with.

Selling products that expire in 2 days is unacceptable. In my country those products are on sale, you can buy then at 50% discount, but can't order them anymore.

I also appreciate the engagement and sharing your experience. Thank you.
