Reality Is Shocking - I Can't Stay Silent

in #hive-1503293 years ago

It's been going on for a while now, but the whole world has been hoping we won't get to this point. Yet, here we are, there's war in Europe and some of our friends' life has become a living hell. I've been watching the news and also refreshing my feed to see what our friends in Kharkiv, Kyiv and the rest of Ukraine are doing. I contacted @blind-spot yesterday morning to see what's going on there as he and @priyanarc are based in Kharkiv, which is a few km from the Russian border. Also contacted my dear friend @zirochka ♥️, who's based in Kyiv as I'm worried.

The last update from our friends from Kharkiv was yesterday, while @zirochka has been reporting continuously, keeping us updated about the situation. My biggest fear is that they are going to be left without internet and then we lose contact with them.

I can't even begin to imagine what they are going through, but I'm thinking of them all the time, praying for them to stay safe and hoping this madness will be over soon and life can return to normal. (Yeah right, who am I kidding?)

The New Reality

I'm based in Romania, so basically I'm not in immediate danger for now, but only the blind and the ignorant can't see the long term consequences of these events and the possible danger we may be facing if sh*t hits the fan.

Romania shares border with Ukraine in two places, plus there's the exit to the Black Sea, which is of strategic importance in this case. So in case Ukraine is occupied by Russia, we basically are going to share those borders with Russia. There's Moldova, the 2.5m country you see on the map, which is now in a huge danger as well. Imagine if Ukraine, a country of 41m people can be occupied like it is happening now, what's going to happen to a small country like Moldova, which is smaller than Kyiv, that had around 2.9m inhabitants.

The last 24 hours has shown there's a new reality, the situation is very different from last week for example. Ukrainian citizens are seeking refuge in the neighboring countries like Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and Bulgaria, fleeing Ukraine till they can.

Romania has been preparing for this, measures have been taken in case we need to host Ukrainian refugees and what was a possibility, became necessity and reality today. The media says over 10k people arrived in Romania in the last 24 hours and today their number may be higher.

What To Expect?

Europe's map is being redesigned as we speak. We don't yet know whether it is temporary or permanent, that is to be decided in the near future. Moldova is in a huge danger as well. Some of the Ukrainian are fleeing to Moldova, but what can such a small country do? How can they host so many people? Their possibilities are very limited, plus they are not a NATO member, so they may be in danger of being occupied as well, in which case most of them is going to come to Romania.

Romania has been the NATO border towards Ukraine and Moldova. NATO troupes have been constantly coming to Romania for some time now and more will come if necessary. Life in strategic areas is going to change, people will be living with army presence for awhile now and if things will get really bad, then ... I don't even want to think about that.

The Economical Impact On Romania

Romania doesn't have a strong economy compared to other EU countries, inflation has been rising slowly but steadily (not just due to the pandemic), even though the government has been trying to hide it as always. The local currency is Lei, we're not using EURO yet, but to hedge against inflation, the population prefers to hold their savings in EURO (those who are not in crypto).

I've been keeping on eye on the Lei/EURO rate for a long time and it's been clearly visible that it has been kept at the level of under 5 Lei for some time. You could see rates like 4.998 or so for months now, while prices have been rising.

Today the exchanges were exchanging Lei to EURO at the rate of 5.01 Lei, but that was just the rate listed as many did not have any EURO to sell. Who can blame them? I would not sell my EURO now either, unless there's an emergency. Looks like the predictable EURO price explosion may happen soon.

Gas prices have risen steadily and the rise is going to continue. The good news is winter is over soon, so heating will not be necessary. Heating in Romania is done mostly by gas, prices have been sky rocketing in some cities before this has happened. Imagine what's going to happen from now on. So the population is going to use less gas, but industrial users will be using the same quantity at a higher price most likely, which will reflect on the price of the final products and/or services. (40% of the gas supply has been coming from Russia).

It is foreseeable that the tourism industry will take a hit again this year, the tourist season will be non existent as who on earth would visit a country, that is at the border of a war zone.

Final Notes

Compared to Ukrainians, we are still safe for the time being, so I'm not complaining (I rarely do as it leads nowhere). I just felt like I had to write this down. I'm still optimistic but my motto is "Hope for the best and prepare for the worst." In order to do that, you have to know what's the worst case scenario.

I'd like to ask yo to support our Ukrainian users if you can. They need our support more than ever. Even if this madness ends, it's going to be tough to get back to normal, to rebuild their lives. Their Hive wallet can't be touched, no one can take their stake away.

Sort:

Slovakia is accepting all refugees from Ukraine. There are shelter places and humanitarian organisations helping. People are helping as much as they can as well. We have also provided blankets and food, this is the least we can do to support. My heart is bleeding for all people of Ukraine suffering the actions of Putin. My prayers are with people who are fighting and also with those who cannot flee the country to safety.

Слава Україні!

This is hard to swallow to be honest, no matter how strong you are. I'm not affected directly at the moment, but this is what I've been thinking all day. It's hard to imagine all those people living in fear, chased out of their homes and for what? For an ego maniac, that is hunger for power.

I saw an article published by Euronews, saying charity organizations have raised $4m in crypto to help those in need. It's good to know Slovakia is accepting refugees as well.

Are your parents in Ukraine?

I'm from Slovakia and my family lives close to the borders with Ukraine. The bombing is less than 200km away from my hometown. I have many friends in Ukraine and I'm worried sick as I don't know if they all are safe.

I also can't imagine how it is. I'm grateful to live in a neutral country but I cannot look away, or close my eyes. There are so many wars in the world and the only ones hurting are the innocent civilians.

Yeah, civilians and especially children are going to pay the price, unfortunately. I hope your friends are safe. It's difficult not to have news from them and knowing they are in a war zone.

It is hard to see the news and I have no words on what hell our friends have to go through right now. I hope they are safe and will be able to keep in touch somehow.

Still my heart is with all and filled with worries.

Same here, I've been stressed for two days and have a headache as this is not something to take lightly.

I hope we can help them, at least with some votes as they will need funds and crypto can't be seized.

I saw your post by the way, nice of you!

Just a little attempt to offer some sort of support. Sitting here watching the pics and vids rolling in drives me nuts. What a mess they are in right now.

I hope Europe starts to get their shit together and be a safe haven for all able to leave.

I hope so too as this is not a joke. If they take over Moldova, we're in a deep sh*t.

We have people from every country on Hive. I haven't seen what any Russians have to say about the crimes of their leader. I have been to Ukraine and I hate to see the country being trashed and people killed. We need to stand with them. Violence is not the answer.

They are frightened people. They have been oppresed for years. Maybe the Russian youth can rise above years of oligarchs and terror.

Rising up against a repressive regime is never easy. Wishing them well.

Apparently your eyes are closed and you don’t notice it, and most likely you don’t see how the citizens of Russia relate to all this. Many, I emphasize - MANY Russians are opposed to radical methods of resolving these issues and are against the war on the territory of Ukraine. I noticed that here on Hive everyone who is not too lazy to raise this topic, and write their posts without even having more or less up-to-date information, but only dispose of what TV shows them. There is just one question - where have these people been with their posts over the past 8 years? I admit that few of the authors of the posts that I saw here today care about them seriously, and some statements towards the citizens of Russia are rude and boorish messages that are not addressed to Putin and the top of Russia, namely, to ordinary citizens of Russia, these people manage to speculate on this tragedy, these people are not people at all if they sincerely think so! #stopwar

I am not against the people of Russia and have not spoken against them. This is down to Putin and his cronies who will do anything to stay in power. I have seen the protests by brave Russians who risk arrest. If they are posting on Hive I will support them too.

Don't make assumptions...

My assumptions do not specifically relate to your words, I say this because I have seen some posts on this topic from people who have only a superficial understanding of the whole situation in Ukraine, and they themselves live in a completely different part of the planet. I live 14 km from Mariupol, and yesterday I woke up from a shell explosion that flew into my city, that's all the assumptions. I have up-to-date information about a lot of what is happening now in the framework of this tragedy, I have many friends, as well as relatives who can provide me with first-hand information! And everything that is happening now in the media, in Russian, in Ukrainian, in some other countries - for the most part - is distorted news and very doubtful for authenticity. I have a lot of friends, and you will not believe it - but none of my acquaintances or relatives support military operations on the territory of Ukraine or anywhere else. We live in the 22nd century, any issue should be resolved peacefully, and I sincerely believe that those people who give orders to the military to conduct certain special operations will be punished for their actions both against their own people and against the people of Ukraine! World peace!

I'm sure most people don't want this, so why not agree on that? Most of us operate on limited information, but it's obvious these are terrible events that were set up by other crimes.

I have a lot of friends, and you will not believe it - but none of my acquaintances or relatives support military operations on the territory of Ukraine or anywhere else.

That's what I thought as the people have no say in that country. There's no freedom and any action has serious consequences. Thanks for sharing your opinion, it is highly appreciated.

The people of Russia are being held hostage by Putin. Opposition and counter-speech is crushed. I'm sorry that it's now called "The Russians", where many are against it, but have no way of changing anything. Nobody re-elected Putin, nobody can vote him out. Anyone who speaks out lives at war with Putin and his regime.

I fully agree with you, we have to support them, help them.

I don't know what Russians have to say about it, but most likely a lot of them has nothing to do with it and are as innocent as the Ukrainians. There have been protests in Moscow, arrests as well.

I saw the protests in Russia. Those are brave people given the lack of political freedom there. It's another case of a populist leader trying to drive up nationalist feelings, regardless of the costs. Ironically such protests may be illegal in the UK under our Putin loving leaders.

Lol, "Putin loving leaders" 😂

Well, there's no freedom at all in Russia, I guess the expression "freedom of speech" is deleted from the dictionary. Let's see what the EU will do. The masses are leaving the country.

We feel sorry for the victims of this war. Hope that it will come to an end soon without further deterioration.

Stay safe and !ALIVE

That's what we are all hoping for, but I don't know how soon this can end and in what way. Fingers crossed.

The russian people should replace the mad pig. He is either insane or very ill and doesn't care for his future anymore. He never cared about others - cold bloodedly killed opposition and reporters, but now he doesn't even care for his own future. Russia should free itself from the criminal oligarch regime.

He has made sure to stay in office forever, changing the law for his own benefit. He's ex kgb, so what do you expect?

These are sad times honestly, We all hope this can be brought to an abrupt end pretty soon . Stay safe meanwhile !

Thank you. I'm safe for now and hope it will never come to the point when I will not be safe, but you never know with this nutcase. Let's hope they can reach an agreement.

Thank you for posting and letting us know what is going on... I'm sending good vibes from Canada.. The whole World will be watching.. I wish you all the very best over there..

Thank you, it is really appreciated! I hope it's going to work out, although I'm not optimistic at all.

The only problem is that citizens are forbidden to leave the Ua, my friends are in the middle of the highway hoping to pass the border.

I've heard men between 18 and 60 are not allowed.

Yes, but that doesn't change a thing. Her husband is 58 and they are scared they won't pass.

Well, I wish them luck! Fingers crossed.

Thank you, thank you for your post, my dear Erikah! <3<3<3

It's really a dramatic situation. Since I woke up yesterday and I read what happened I can't stop to refresh all the news. I'm so sad for Ukraine people and I really can't image the fear and the drama they are living now. I'm based in Italy, so not close the Ukraine, but I can see the long term conseguences and, to be honest, I'm really worried for the future.

I know what you mean and I am worried too, as I said in my post, only the blind and the ignorant can't see how devastating this is going to be for Europe and for the world as well. There will be economic consequences not many can't see right now.

Ukraine is the third largest grain exporter for example and 4th on the corn list, staple food in Europe. Can you imagine what it means to lose that?

I totally agree with you.

I'm just glad that Hungary allows the refugees to enter without restriction for now, despite our governments questionable actions in the past.

Well, this situation is different. Imagine if Hungary would be in this situation ...
There will be a lot of people exiting Ukraine this weekend I suppose.

There is a sizeable Hungarian minority in Ukraine near our borders who want to be on this side of the border. However there is also a bunch of Ukrainian guest workers in Hungary who for sure want their families to flee here. But we don't have the biggest border with Ukraine also.

I'm aware of the situation as I live in Transylvania. There are a few countries where they can go, I suppose Poland and Slovakia is also accepting refugees, but Hungarians will want to go to Hungary, obviously :)

Nothing is going to be the same. Who would think that we will witness a war so close and like I said before in another comment, it is personal, having friends thrown in the hell. And who knows how long it will last.

That is true. I would have never thought there will be war in the neighboring country, yet here we are, right next to the war zone.

Good article and accurate overview with respect to the overall deeply concerning situation in neighbouring Ukraine! All the best, take care, stay safe and well, and have an excellent evening along with your close/dear ones! Namaste and great peace your way! 😊🙏☮️

Thank you! We're safe for now but as I see, you're closer to the war zone, so you stay safe as well and try to live a normal life (easier said than done 😦)

I wish you also all the best and enjoy your time with your loved ones. 😊

Thank you very much for your best wishes! Indeed, it seems a bit scary here now that I am hearing some airplanes flying by... All the best, take care, and great peace your way! 😊🙏☮️

An acquaintance from me is from Transnistria, fled from there 30 years ago as a 17 year old when they put a gun in his hand in the war there. Similiar situation, only way smaller (and forgotten by most of the world). Again and again these wars happen, and you're right: where will it stop?

Hive Power Up Month - Feedback from February day 22

Moldova is already on the border with Russia, or you forgot Transnistria? They have been asking the Russians for help since 2014. They have been receiving Russian support, and because Romania is largely Racist towards Moldova and Moldova in turn holds animosity towards Transnistria and the rest of Romania, while Romania is completely ignorant of Transnistria, I'd be much more concerned about your own failure of a country.

Considering that the US has more troops in Romania, than Romania, and that they are actively building and or buying bases all over Romania and in certain places in Romania English is the only language spoken, and that Romania has no problem with the almost 20 year occupation of Iraq that they've actively aided and participated along with the US in, You ought to be worried, especially when Romanians have an overtly Racist attitude towards the Roma Romanians, and guess who ain't ever going to hold office or be represented in that god forsaken hellhole who is owned by the US?

As for the neonazi controlled Ukraine that has been bombing Ukrainians for the last 8 years while Romania did nothing? Lol go fuck yourself.

Sure, 14000 Putin make believe victims.
And fuck the Minsk accords. Guess that the Neo Nazi operating in the open is also Russia Talking points lol.
