Bubur Sumsum (Indonesian Traditional Porridge)

In the past, bubur sumsum was mostly served in traditional events, but with the progress of the times, this porridge is now widely enjoyed at family events, such as when breaking the fast together.





Bubur Sumsum is Indonesian traditional porriedge that processed rice flour and coconut milk combined with sweet brown sugar. This porridge is usually enjoyed at breakfast or casual meals. Or usually used as a special food after a celebration, to relieve fatigue.

This Sunday I made porridge for breakfast, coincidentally all my ingredients were already available at home. It's also very easy to make and doesn't take long. Be a delicious marrow porridge made by myself.



Necessary materials:

• 250 grams of rice flour
• 1500 ml coconut milk
• 3 grams of palm sugar
• 2 pieces pandan leave
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon vanilla


How to cook Bubur Sumsum?

• Dissolve rice flour in 1500 coconut milk
• Add salt, vanilla and pandam leaves to make it fragrant
• Stir the dough over low heat, do not let it clump or burn
• After the porridge is soft and cooked, turn off the heat and set aside



Ingredients for making brown sugar sauce

• 100 grams of palm sugar
• 200 ml of water
• 2 pieces pandan leave

how to cook coconut milk with brown sugar

• Cook water
• Mix palm sugar
• Cook until boiling
• Add vanilla and pandan leaves for fragrance
• After boiling turn off the stove, and remove




How to present?:

• Put the marrow porridge into a serving bowl
• Add brown sugar sauce
• You can add ice cube if you want it cold
• Bubur sumsum is ready to serve




In addition to personal consumption, Bubur Sumsum also can be used as income by selling in the market. When viewed from the origin, this delicious food comes from Central Java or East Java. We don't have pandan easily available here. Do you know if there are any other herbs/plants with a similar flavour it could be substituted with?

There is. the name called bay leaf. This makes the porridge fragrant with a special taste. However, the fragrance cannot resemble pandan leaves.
