I have finished The Sudden Appearance of Hope by Claire North. For a rating I think I'll go positive and give it 4⭐ but I feel like if I read it at another time I may have knocked that down a little. I'll try to clarify what I liked about it and didn't below.
For starters, I thought the story was good and that the book had a very strong premise, a woman who can't be remembered. I considered it very intriguing and interesting how this then shaped her life and how she fit within a world that could only really perceive her when observing her, always and only ever, for the first time. The book touches on various different things, a bit of social commentary here, a bit of philosophy there. Told from a 1st person perspective there is emotional introspection or at least reflection in the writing throughout most of the book. In other words, I didn't find the main character bland. She had a personality, she had mental quirks and she struggled with things. I do, however, think the 1st person perspective and writing style Claire North uses here will be the largest barrier to whether you can like the book or not. Though the writing really personifies the main character, Hope, and reflects her psyche moment to moment, in doing so it frequently devolves into a stream of her consciousness. As an example, something that happens a lot is when she has a thought and then she defines the word or concept before considering its current application to herself in the story. Likewise, this perspective also results in sometimes drawn out descriptions or titbits about places as she changes locations, which wasn't that uncommon because there was actually a fair amount of travel in the story. This writing style didn't really bother me and I liked that it was different from what I usually read but it would make me hesitant to recommend this to someone without them reading a sample first to see if it was something they could get behind or not. Also I thought the end was a bit weaker.
