Cloudy Cabo da Roca

Cabo da Roca 2023 1.jpg

I have mentioned this place before. But it is almost mandatory to go there every few years and take tons of photos. The place itself doesn't change much. It's all hard rocks and a lighthouse. But what changes is the weather. And it changes fast! Not only was the aura different every time I was there (from calm and sunny to very cold and windy), but this time I saw it changing minute after minute.

Just around 20 km away, the day was pretty hot and very sunny, but as we were getting closer, the temperature dropped to around 22 degrees (which I find perfect) with thick, grey clouds above.

It is the westernmost part of continental Europe and one of the most visited places in Portugal as well. Especially since it is very close to Lisbon and there are tours organized just to get there.

Tons of tourists nonstop!

The cliffs are around 160 meters above the ocean, and they are very steep with lots of sharp rocks on the bottom and strong waves at the bottom. The fence is to protect people, and crossing it is a pretty dumb idea. Yet some still do and once in a while there is news that someone fell to the ocean and died.

Some Azulejos (the tiles) on one of buildings there show the lighthouse as well.

And a typical Portuguese windmill. They can still be found around the countryside. Some are in a terrible state; some have been bought, renovated, and changed to living homes or summer houses.

The last one, in typical white and blue colours, shows Pena National Palace, located in Sintra. Another place worth visiting and very close by

I couldn't get enough of the ocean view with so many shades of blue. It seemed like the clouds were touching it (and soon after did).

There is a path that leads to this other part (you can see it in the photo below) though signs do not advise to go there.

The clouds were slowly reaching the little town between the hills.

Cabo da Roca 2023 8.jpg

At this time of the year (middle of the summer) most plants were dry and just a few very hardy flowers and bushes were still green or blooming. In spring, all the area is covered in blooming bushes - mostly Rockrose and Carpobrotus in yellow, or pink. It looks pretty amazing then.

After a quick walk around, coffee and dozens of photos taken we left as we had another spot to visit...

... hidden between all the pretty rocks.

But that part I will leave for another time :)

Cabo da Roca 2023 5.jpgCabo da Roca 2023 3.jpg

Cabo da Roca 2023 4.jpg

And as we followed a narrow path that led us there, the clouds were getting lower... and lower.
This was maybe 15 min walk and the tip of the lighthouse was already hiding in the clouds.

Cabo da Roca 2023 27.jpg

On the way back the whole Cabo da Roca was covered in thick clouds. I can imagine the people that went there on a planned visit and tight schedule were pretty pissed. It was impossible to see the ocean or the cliffs around anymore.

Bonus shot:
I still don't get why people put the tiny stickers around. Mostly on road signs or some boards dedicated for local news.
But I do know that some ether people like to spot those :)

Hahaha, yes, but now you also spot them :p

This is Cabo da Roca, what we missed when we continued from Lisbon toward Nazaré and Porto. Cool I can see it now through your photos :) 😇

Hehehe yea and I have to take photos of them too now :p

Yep, that's the one.
Next time ;)

It's just contagious 😂

A charming place... What cliffs, 160 meters!... And that beautiful lighthouse, it's a view like something out of a watercolor painting... There's even some fog being on the seashore!... Me It was fascinating to see those species of agave plants, here in my country I think I have the same ones... Excellent article... And wow, you really took a lot of photos @ewkaw friend!...

This place looks so beautiful I wish I would be there with you enjoying the scenery😉

It is beautiful :)

Nice photos of the most western point of Europe. It is a place I wanted to visit when last in Portugal but never got a chance. Great photos although cloudy. I like the terrain and vegetation as well.

Oh, hopefully next time you manage. It is a really nice spot.

Looks beautiful. Our heart can't resist our desire to go to the same place once a year, ain't it?😃

Nop, just to make sure it is still there :)

Olá, já aí estive e é maravilhoso ❤️ Obrigada pela partilha 😊

Yay! There is more of us :)

Glad you visited it, I loved it when I was there. I was also very lucky to experience it on a windless day. Portugal is a gem.

Oh lucky you! Once I was there is was extremely windy and very cold!

Cool video... and a lot less people :)

Must be very windy most of the time there I guess.
Less people in my case cause I am an early bird 🙂 However, despite my early arrival there as I also had to ride up to Porto afterwards, there were convoys of tourist busses behind me. Fortunately I managed those shots before most of them walked in.

Rocks and coastline, oh how I love this! I don't know why but I really like this.

Me too, me too :D Especially the rocks. One day I will break my legs jumping on them 😂

Visiting Cabo da Roca seems like a mesmerizing experience, capturing the ever-changing moods of nature. Your detailed description and beautiful photos make me feel like I was right there with you, witnessing the dramatic weather shifts and the breathtaking views. It's a place that truly showcases the raw beauty and power of the natural world. Can't wait to hear about your next adventure among those pretty rocks! 🌊📸🌦️

I am glad you liked it. The second part has to wait a bit :) But I will definitely show it. It is probably even more beautiful!

Edit: Shame it is not your own thought though.

No friend, that's my thought. Cabo da Roca is incredible. I love the blue of this water, I also like the culture of the stickers on the sign. I'm really glad you had fun and had a good experience.

The praise for this place cannot do justice; it's truly a beautiful world, and you can imagine how peaceful it must be. Absolutely stunning photos!

Thank you! Despite all the people there it is pretty peaceful. Probably because it is a huge area and you don't really feel the crowd.

Very beautiful photographs and post! Thank you very much for sharing them! All the best, take care, stay safe, and keep up the good work here on HIVE! Hive on!

Thanks a lot :)

You're most welcome!

So beautiful Portugal! It looks like a very humidity place right now, but yes, I guess being summer it is, mostly for having the sea so close.

I love the variety of the natural elements: the plants, the dry land, the sea, the rocks, very stunning!

It is normally very dry here in the summer, but that area there gets more clouds than any other place nearby. Which is pretty cool :)

Sweet pics. Of course I am partial to the sea!

It used to be a thing here where people would cover their cars with (bumper)stickers from all of their travels. Not as popular now, but still see it now and again.

Oh yea I have seen the stickers on cars too.
But why stickers on road signs?

!LOL

The first time I got a universal remote control I thought to myself
This changes everything.

Very pleasant trip, so many cliffs there that repeat high make me amazed at this place.
I'm very interested in playing in your area, I think it would take me a very long time if I had to go there, you really amazed everyone with some of the pictures you shared here.
Wonderful trip, hope you have a great time there.

The cliffs there are truly amazing and I did have a great time indeed.
But then again...I like all cliffs :)

Sure I'm sure you must have had a great time there, wow.. it's great if you like all the cliffs that are there, there like me too I really like 😀😀

I really liked this walk and discovery of far. What I like about HIVE is that it allows us to discover places in another country which are often very pretty. even if we went on vacation to the country in question it would be impossible to see everything. Who has to visit their own country? Nobody actually. The blog allows us to target wonderful places and share them with everyone, allowing those who cannot do so to discover new culture and beautiful landscapes or architecture. Thank you for sharing.
Portugal is a beautiful country with an eventful history.
I'm thinking of traveling to Portugal one day. I have friends from the country who invite me on vacation to their homes. I just have to find the time to go there
Have a nice week end

Very true! I have sees so many cool places and unusual dishes that I will probably never have a chance to try. It is pretty amazing :)

I hope you find the time to visit your friends. I am sure you will love it :)
