Family! Any time I hear the word family, my mind doesn't just go to my siblings and parents but to everyone bearing the "Fashanu" surname. I hail from the family of Femi Fashanu with two parents and three siblings, which makes us six in number in my family. I'm not a fan of the famous polygamous family that my dad came from, and I have no issue with people from such families, but if I am to think very well about it, is my family a small family?
My answer would be no because I grew up knowing all my cousins and uncles; we visit each other during holidays, and we always look forward to the next family house we would be seeing during the holiday, so it is said to say that I grew up in a big family even if I have just one nuclear family.
The FASH family is a big family, and I love big families. My dad and his cousins grew up in a mansion in our home town. The mansion's name is "Ile Apotipopo" in my hometown, Iludun, Irepodun Local Government. Due to this experience and the bond of love he grew up with, this made it very easy for the brothers to allow their kids to visit each other and get to know their cousins during the holiday. Now, I don't even see my cousins as just mere cousins but as brothers and sisters.
One interesting part is that I have a group picture of myself and my cousins when we were little. The peak of living in such family is that we love each other and are always looking out for each other. Although we may live in different locations currently, we have a family group on WhatsApp where all my cousins, siblings, and I normally chat and plan events together.
I am always happy when I meet them, and I always look forward to seeing them. During festive periods like Christmas, we all meet at the Olori Ebi house to celebrate with each other. While other parents are talking and gisting, I would be there talking with my cousins; there is always so much to talk about.
I would always prefer a big family to a small family. I have come to understand that families that stay together and love each other are families that find it each to build faster and easier.
I don't mind living in a big mansion or the same estate with my siblings. I don't even want to stay too far from them, like living 5 states apart from each other. I don't like the thought of that; if I have my way, I don't mind having a big mansion where my siblings and their partner would pick a quarter to stay with our children growing up together. Its also one of my dreams.
Yes, I know that everything has a disadvantage but where there is love and trust, I know that the advantage would be more than the disadvantage and I am ready to work things out with any of them.
This is why I consider my family a big family that has their own branch and I believe each branch will decide how they would like to live.
