My Visit to a Tourist attraction ( OLUMO ROCK, NIGERIA)

in #hive-1538503 years ago

Hello everyone,

I had an amazing experience going to Olumo rock and I will love to share my experience. Olumo Rock is located at Abeokuta, Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria. My country is blessed with several tourist attractions but the Olumo Rock is very special. The name "Olumo Rock" is quite popular in Nigeria, it is because most children have been educated on this tourist center at primary level of education, also during history classes we were taught about it.

My Experience.

On a Saturday, I woke up really excited about the beautiful day, I got my chores done and freshened up. My family friend Mrs Ajoke a native of the state, came visiting and was having a discussion with my mom. I stepped in and exchanged pleasantries with Mrs Ajoke. Mrs. Ajoke seemed very happy to see me, but was worried about me always being idle and indoors and started thinking of places I could visit in the city.

Mrs Ajoke brought up the idea of visiting Olumo Rock. The name rang a bell in my head, because I had heard a lot about it and I knew I was going to enjoy the experience. So I said to her "I think that would work well for me".

So, I set out to Olumo Rock with my siblings, hoping to explore and experience all the stories I have heard about it. We had gotten to the rock in about an hour, I took time to observe the geography of the location around the Rock. It was a town filled with hills, and very ancient houses. The view was so beautiful that I had to take a picture.

The first adventurous activity to do at the rock was to climb a set of 122 stairs to the mid point leading to the rock. The length of the stairs made it very exhausting to climb, as my siblings and I had stopped at intervals to take air until we got to be top of the rock.

History about Olumo Rock.

Nigeria has many tourists attractions in the country. One of them is Olumo rock (Olu”Yoruba language” means God and mo”Yoruba language” means moulded. That’s olumo moulded by God.) it is located in Abeokuta, Ogun state. It’s a two hours trip from Lagos Nigeria by road transport.

In the early 19th century the Egba people had a war with the Dahomey( now known and Benin Republic).
During the war, the Egba people hid under the rock for protection. The name Abeokuta means under the rock. They hid in 4 rooms under the rock. The war lasted 3 years and they hid under for those years.

There’s a shrine where the priest goes in to pray for the people once in a year.

Olumo rock from the base is 137meters above sea level. From the peak of the rock, you can see Eleja primary school in the city, the first church in Nigeria St. Peter’s cathedral Ake can be seen built in 1844.
