SEAPHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST • WEEK 195 • BOATS

in #hive-1198882 years ago

Hello Sea Lovers!
This is my entry for the photocontest hosted by @marc-allaria. If you want to join, you can read the details here. Don't be shy and join this fun contest!

Boats, the theme of this week. Most people will think of boats moored in the harbor, a nice sunset with some boats on the horizon, ...
But stubborn is my middle name so I want to give this a twist. I will take you under the surface of the sea and let you discover some shipwrecks.
Spoiler: Sorry, I don't have pictures of the Titanic!

Salem Express - Egypt

Another angle on the Salem Express

Behind this wreck lies a real sad story. The last voyage of the ship was from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to Safaga, Egypt and had many pilgrims from Mecca onboard. It's still unclear what happened that day, but the ship took another route. Many people told me the captain was in a race with another ship who would be first in the harbor. The captain took a shortcut and hit the reef. The whole boat sank in 20 minutes. I spoke with family members of crew members who lost their live and they told this story. Later I found out that the captain was known for taking shortcuts. No one knows how many people died. The numbers are between 650-850.
Part of the ship is closed as there are still bodies in it. It is an official grave. Some parts are open and you can see the luggage of the passengers. It gave me a creepy feeling. I've been always attracted to shipwrecks and did a lot of dives on wrecks, but this was the one were you actually see the belongings of people who lost their live. After the dive I decided I would never go back to that dive site as a respect to the victims. At the time of the dive I really had mixed emotions. Yes, when you dive on a wreck the change that someone had died is big. But mostly you only see the metal or wood.
MV Salem Express hit the reef on Saturday December 14, 1991.

Really good photograph you make. You make a very nice entry contest. Thanks for sharing

Thank you for stopping by!

This is so cool! Love it ^^

I still have mixed feelings about this dive. But thanks for stopping by!

Yes, the story is sad. Im gladnowdays things like that dont happen mostly. Much less accidents.
But I am really into diving, and photos look great.

Sadly still more than 200 accidents happen each year. 😥

Oh that's so many, I really thought it's much less :(

Yes, but that's a total of huge accidents. Some of them they could rescue all passengers. But a lot of smaller accidents are not counted in this number 😓

Seeing people on a ship is always scary and I can't imagine myself going inside. My dear life 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

It's a very safe way of transportation. You have a bigger change when driving a car!

Great shoots, and with the real history of the boat is impressive.
Thank you for sharing this in DreemPort.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read it!

The smallest HBIT unit: which name is better, bitoshi or quark?

I can understand you emotions when you see belongings on a dive in the wreck.
Great captures though. Thanks for sharing, interesting story too.
Enjoy the new day 👋🏻☀️

Thanks for stopping by. I didn't post pictures of my first dive on this wreck. That time I went into and saw everything. Years later I was there again for an underwater photography course and we had to dive there again. I told them I would dive, but I wouldn't enter the wreck. The rest of our team didn't know the story and asked me why. I told them the whole story and they decided that we all would stay on the outside of the wreck. It was a nice thing we all agreed on this one and I still have a huge respect to them.
Enjoy your day ... It's almost weekend! 😉

You are so welcome 🤗
That’s is great to hear they all decided to stay outside of the wreck. Much respect.
Cool you went for an under water photography course. Must be cool…
Yes… almost weekend 🥳🤩😎 I will, you do the same!

Shit! Why wouldn't they recover the bodies?
Oceans are so freaking scary. I'm always curious to the amount of stuff we'd find at the bottom if we could remove the water. I'd still live in a sailboat though.

They tried to recover the bodies but it was impossible due to the weather conditions. The welded parts of the ship where the bodies are and it's considered as a sea grave.
I won't think of all the stuff that's laying on the bottom of the sea. If they would recover all and pile it up, must be a gigantic heap!
Stay safe on the water!

The welded parts of the ship where the bodies are and it's considered as a sea grave.

Sad ending, I hope their spirits found the way to salvation.

It was a bit controversial. Normally Muslims prefer a burial, and sea burial is permissible when there is no other option. That's the reason that parts are welded, to not disturb the bodies.

A devastating ship under the water! I think there is a place of fish living in the inside part of this ship. It takes a lot of courage to enter anyone. The photography is great.

A wreck is full of life. A lot of fish have their habitat in and around wrecks. Slowly it also gets covered by corals and plants. Entering a wreck is okay as long as you had the required training for it. During the training you learn a lot of things to take in common to enter it safely.
Thanks for the nice comment!

That water is sofa king clear!! It doesn't look that deep, how deep was that? How far out was it? The visibility is incredible, I've never dove in clearer conditions.

It's indeed a dream to dive in such great conditions. I refer to it as an aquarium dive 😁
The sea bed is 29 meters deep. The wreck starts at 12 meter deep.
It lays at approx 4 kilometers from the shore.
Thanks for reading the story.

My pleasure. Thanks for the photos.

That's 95 feet deep and 2n1/2 miles out for my fellow non metric'ers tuned in

=}

Thanks for the conversion 😁

Nice photo. Thank you for your participation

Thanks for the support!

Impressive photos!!
The b&w format suits quite well to these images. Which photo equipment did you use?

The last time that I did scuba diving was more than 15 years ago. I never did underwater photography.

Thanks for your comment.
This was taken with a simple camera. It was a Canon DIGITAL IXUS 980 IS with a fisheye lens, just a tiny camera.

That’s gorgeous

Thank you!

What? You mean upto 650-850 people can actually be in a ship? That's huge. It's really sad to imagine that all these people lost their lives at that moment. All because of the carelessness of their Captain.

We'd see this type of act from cyclists and drivers, but I didn't expect that from a captain. So sad!

Those pictures looks nice. Based on what I've read, I will assume all images to be yours but subsequently, you have to indicate that images are yours at the end of the post or indicate external source for images taken from elsewhere. It makes it easier for your post to undergo smooth screening in DreemPort.

Thanks for sharing this on DreemPort.

This was a huge ship, 115 meters in length, 18 meters in beam, with a draught of 5 meters. It could handle 1200 passengers. Some reports say that at that trip there might have been 1.600 people onboard. 150 people survived.

These are perfect in monochrome, there is something about barnacles being in black and white
Good luck in the contest and popped in from dreemport

Thanks for your kind reply. I prefer the black and white version as they add more drama to the picture.

Drama! Yes, that describes it perfectly. a touch of drama:)
