More Wood Cutting, Fly, Tree Felling, Utd, Log Hauling, Stacking, 8th Birthday - Thursday

in #hive-1143085 days ago

Crisp and cold mornings in the low to mid 20sF this week and yesterday at least dawned clear and sunny. It still takes hours for the farm to thaw out though.

HOLY SHIT did I watch an INTENSE film. FLY is a Nat Geo documentary about base jumping.... The film is the exact reasons why I paraglide and NEVER got into jumping. I've too many people over the years have gone the really fast way, terminal velocity or faster like a bug into a windshield. HOLY SHIT am I glad...

Mid morning I went and sharpened the chain for the saw, condensed the oil to one jug, then headed out to the hill to keep working on the trees.

I had dropped 3 live fir trees and needed to limb and buck them. After looking them over I went with the upper 2 that were a bit smaller but right next to each other.

IMG_20241107_113018.jpg

It made it rather difficult to buck them being so close but it did help being on the slope so I could drag the trunk downhill to me instead of hiking up the hill.

IMG_20241107_113855.jpg

Soon I had them bucked and I started on the 3rd tree.

IMG_20241107_115504.jpg

I bucked some of the base as I hiked down limbing then finished the limbing before bucking it. I was able to drag the trunk down hill as well so the rounds all ended up in a pile.

Still lots of trees that can come down.

IMG_20241107_122133.jpg

I hiked back up the hill to take a look at some others trees and ended up dropping two little ones. They will get cut up and all the live rounds will have to get hauled to curing storage, which I will have to build I think.

I was beat and needed a break which happened to coincide with Man Utd's 2nd half being on. In what amounted to a minor miracle they ACTUALLY WON a match. Not for lack of trying to lose though.

The forecast is RAIN RAIN RAIN for all next week so I HAD to load the nice dry rounds to move to the wood cover. I backed the trailer up the the dead end and loaded it up.

IMG_20241107_141223.jpg

I had to hike down into the swale to get the lone round that slipped past the wires.

IMG_20241107_141625.jpg

Soon I had the rounds all loaded and towed the trailer to the yard to unload.

IMG_20241107_143413.jpg

I had to do some moving and clearing before I could unload the rounds. I decided to just stack the rounds on the curing side so they are under cover for now.

IMG_20241107_143941.jpg

Lots of splitting needs to be done for sure.

Later to soak with all the excitement.

Today is the last clear day before the rains begin so I have to try and build a rack/cover to stack the wood to cure on, this morning is J's school's veterans assembly, then mid day is R's, then at 2pm is the co-op drop-off, and I have to tack the feed bags up to the underside of the wood cover to sheet wet back.

Plenty of very good wood after it cures!👍
You will have a nice warm home!😊

That's the hope. I've got more trees on the farm than I could burn in my lifetime.

That’s awesome to have a wood supply like that!👍
I have 5 acres, but most of the trees I would want to cut are maple and Cottonwood where I live. The Doug furs are a bit higher up in elevation in the forest on public land, where I can’t harvest…🙄

Manually curated by brumest from the @qurator Team. Keep up the good work!

First time am seeing how log of wood is gotten, the machine though made it very simple and straight forward.
