Sunshine, Plants, Cleanup, Tearout, Hauling, Trimming, Tree, Starlink, Kraken - Tuesday

The clearing after the storm is always nice, especially the nice clear air and the glint of the frost on the well washed trees. Now that the sun is so low the trees are blocking it much of the day.

That makes the birds all huddle in the little bits of sunshine that do make it to the main part of the farm.

Washed my clothes first thing and got them through the dryer and put away. Then I got the plants watered in the studio but my doofy ass forgot to take the Soilmoist with so I will have to go add today. The Soilmoist are polymer crystals that swell with and retain water to allow it to be used by the plant slowly. The addition will make watering spaced out a lot farther.

With the 20F lows I needed to deal with the stuff that would freeze to the ground and the plastic from the pine needles needed to be folded.

We got some nice sunshine during the day and it warmed up to nearly 50F. It made working in the afternoon rather nice.

I finally did it. The Oregon Grape by the patio got removed with a bit of glee from me as I have wanted it gone for years. The stuff sat directly under the drip edge of the roof and caused far too much rain to splash towards the house. Having removed the boulders that lined it I had to get this mass out. The huge pry bar did the trick.

This was the last of the super easily spreading plants removed, I've slowly been taking it out over the years.

A good bit of raking later and I had the whole area very nicely smoothed out. I am now looking forward to the rain this weekend so I can see just how well it will handle the runoff from the roof. I know the rain will wash a line along the soil and create a gravel strip, my concern is how much splash will happen.

A few wheelbarrow loads later and I had the debris dumped over the hillside and the yard much leaner. I rolled the boulders across to the spool where they will stay for the winter.

One of my logging cables was still laying out and I drug it across the farm then flaked it next to the spool with my other cable.

Next to my truck parking spot is a Juneberry bush and a mock orange. The mock orange tends towards bushiness and it was really crowding my parking spot so I went and hacked it back pretty hard to force it to grow away from my truck.

I managed to hike up the hillside to the upper pen to take a look around and found the chickens have been all over the pen scratching in the pine needles. The Bald Eagles are back and Jax freaked out when one of them yanked a branch from a tree right above the house and carried it up to their nest.

I KNEW I had missed a tree on the hillside. This one is nicely standing dead and will get cut down today to get hauled to the wood cover where it can get split for immediate burning.

STARLINK CALLED ME BACK!!!!!!!! We are getting a whole new kit shipped and it will hopefully be here tomorrow or Friday! What a pain in the ass but it is getting fixed for free. The down time is frustrating but we are managing thanks to our grandfathered Verizon data plan with 2tb a month available.

Our dishwasher fritzed. The buttons on the front would light up and flash in weird patterns and the machine would not run or stay running. I pulled the panel apart to find the part number of the control board which are available for about $150. So as not to leave it in pieces I put the board back in and a couple of screws to hold the frame and when I tried to run it it kicked right on. I think something got into a contact and was shorting it but my taking it apart jostled it loose and it seems like it will work.

I mean... come on! ALL 3 OF YOU SHOULD BE IN YOUR HOME! NOT YOUR NEIGHBOR'S!

Ugg, the Kraken got trounced. They got boned by the refs on a goal call then got pounded by the Avs.

Got out to soak but my stupid skin is fighting me still.

It's low 20s F now before dawn and it will be interesting to go around the farm and see how everything is handling it. After getting the boys to school I have to go to the store early this morning to pickup cupcakes for R to take to school tomorrow for his Birthday and I'll get gas on way home, need to roll to try and work out the kink in one of my ribs, I want to cut the tree down, buck it, and haul the rounds to the yard, and not sure if I will do it today but I have to splice the cat5 cable to the greenhouse since it got got by the snowblower last year.
