The photo above is the gate of Taman Sari in Yogyakarta, circa 1911. You can see the trees growing around this site, a sign of neglect. Taman Sari was a bathing complex of the Yogyakarta Palace which was used from 1765-1812 until the British attacked.
Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, tired of government affairs and war, ordered the construction of a bathing complex for the royal family. This bathing complex was so magnificent for the size of that era, and the remnants of its splendor can still be witnessed today. Some areas of this bathing complex have now become residential areas.
