Rummu Quarry - Summer In Estonia's Unique Waters
Have you ever dreamed of an underwater city or wanted to see a place where nature and human activity have created something truly extraordinary? Then Rummu Quarry is just for you!
Rummu is indeed one of the strangest and most unique places in Estonia. This former limestone quarry has transformed into an incredibly beautiful attraction through the combined effects of nature and human activity. The quarry's history dates back to 1938 when it was associated with the nearby Murru prison. Prisoners worked in the quarry, mining limestone. After the quarry's closure, when the pumps no longer drained the water, a lagoon with crystal clear water formed here, submerging both buildings and forest.
The underwater world in Rummu is like a fairy tale. In the clear water, you can see submerged buildings and trees still standing upright, albeit bare. This creates a truly mystical and eerie sight that leaves an unforgettable impression on visitors. The deepest point of the quarry reaches about 10 meters, making it a popular diving spot.
Although Rummu's history is linked to a Soviet-era prison, locals have managed to turn it into an attractive summer resort and tourist attraction.
There's something for everyone here:
- History enthusiasts can participate in guided tours of the former prison or take a self-guided audio tour.
- Beach lovers can enjoy a nice "chill beach" where a DJ plays music and a relaxing atmosphere prevails.
- Adventure seekers can rent SUP boards or water bicycles to explore the underwater world.
- For divers, it's a true paradise, offering a unique opportunity to explore the underwater town and forest.
- For children, there's a water trampoline park, ensuring fun for the whole family.
One must-do activity is climbing the hill. From the artificial mountain, there's a breathtakingly beautiful view of the blue lagoon and the entire surrounding area. It's an ideal spot to take some memorable photos or simply enjoy the view.
Interestingly, the water in the quarry is usually warmer than in natural lakes, making it an especially popular summer destination. Despite its artificial origin, Rummu Quarry has become home to several plant and animal species, including rare water birds, adding ecological value to this place.
The unique beauty of Rummu Quarry hasn't gone unnoticed by filmmakers. It has been used as a filming location for several music videos and movies, which has further increased its fame.
We visited Rummu with our guests from Finland and were very satisfied with the experience. The staff in the area were friendly and helpful, which made the visit even more pleasant.
Rummu Quarry is a great example of how a former industrial area can be transformed into something unique and beautiful. It's a place where you can fully enjoy Estonia's short but sweet summer. If you have the opportunity, I definitely recommend visiting Rummu - it's an experience you won't forget!
