Last weekend I was in the lovely city of Ghent when I noticed a piece of paper that was taped on the inside of a front door window. It it was hung there on purpose for for passers-by to read.
The paper had no title and no author and it contained a list of simple things that make you happy.
Reading the list made me smile. The things on the list were so recognizable and most of them were indeed things that would give me a little moment of joy too.
It made me think it's good to appreciate those little things in life that bring moments of joy.
Today when I was cycling to work I witnessed a beautiful sunrise. The sky was coloring orange and the sun peaked over the trees in the background. I recognized it immediately as a little moment of joy and I stopped to make a picture of it. After arriving at work I sent the picture to our families whatsapp group whishing them a lovely day, hoping they would have their moment of joy too.
A lot of times you don't have any influence on some of the little moments of joy; they just happen or they don't.
But some of them you can influence; especially the actions where you can give someone else a little moment of joy.
And most of these moments of joy are completely free to receive or even to give, so enjoy these moments and give some of these moments to others as well.
Here is a list of moments of joy I collected (both from the list I saw as ones I thought of myself).
- Watching the sun rise
- Watching the sun set
- Your favorite song on the radio
- Waking up in the morning remembering it is weekend
- A genuine smile from a stranger
- Receiving an upvote from a whale
- The smell fresh bread
- A cup of coffee in the morning
- An unexpected visit of a friend
- Finding an ice cream in the back if the fridge
- Fresh sheets on the bed
- A traffic light that turns green when you approach
- The smell of rain after a long period of drought
- The sound of singing birds
- The warmth of sun on your face
- A nice bouquet of flowers
- Spotting a rainbow
- Sound of the sea
- The smell of freshly cut grass
- A butterfly in your garden
- A cold drink on a summer day
- A seat by the fireplace
It's good to recognize these moments and appreciate them consiously when they happen.
