Let's travel together #311 - Café Gloriette, Schloss Schoenbrunn (Wien, Austria)

When it comes to coffee and cafes in general, I'd lie saying that I have much knowledge. First, I've never been a coffee person until one or two years ago, finding it difficult to drink even a cappuccino if it wasn't made with milk as I never enjoyed the bitter taste.

It's funny that even hot chocolate wasn't on my list of favourite drinks, there being just a specific brand that was creating these sweet enough for me. But as I grew up and waking up rather quickly than normally happened, having a coffee in the morning came as a necessity and not as a way of acting cool as a teenager.

Actually, not even at almost 27 years old I can't say that I drink proper coffee but rather instant coffee 3 in 1 which comes with both milk and sugar in the same coffee bag. It's true that this is not always enough, but at least I've made a step forward, yay!

I can't say the same about cafes though. I am a big fan of cafes just because in most cases they look very cool and there is a specific vibe you won't meet in any other restaurant or pub.

One of them was also Café Gloriette that we got to see before making it to the Schonbrunn Palace.

At first, we thought we were standing in front of another historical building that more or less was preserved with the test of time. Once we figured out it was a cafe, we were really surprised but our doubt was knocked off by the tens of people sitting inside and having a drink at a table, while there were ever more people waiting outside with the hope a table would be free soon.

Even if a hot drink would sound amazing for a cold and grumpy day as we had back then, we had a lot more things to see for the rest of the day and we couldn't afford the situation of spending an unknown amount of time outside until having a coffee inside. So we had to call ourselves satisfied based on what we could spot from the outside only.

Luckily, nor the grumpy weather or the thing that we couldn't find a free table didn't stop us from enjoying the view, as well as taking lots of pictures.

I think there is no need anymore to say that the biggest surprise for me was the architecture of the building that came in a great Italian style that I think is not so common for this part of Europe. However, it still managed to find its special spot in a town filled with history and beauty at every step, there being rumours that Café Gloriette is the place where you can drink the best coffee in Vienna.

The history that still rests within is not only the single interesting part of the cafe but also the view which is absolutely stunning, showing both one of the most important palaces of Vienna but also the town itself in the background.

I know this can't be entirely observed in my pictures due to the dark clouds that don't bring their contribution over the whole scenery, but this is the first thought that comes into everyone's head while drinking their coffee inside. And we can only trust their word for that.

The baroque style of architecture is very specific to Sicily and it dates since 1775, the overall building belonging to a famous forest from Venice that disconnects people from urban life. The whole Schoenbrunn magic became real on the desire of the Emperor Franz Joseph I and Sisi who appreciated the beauty of the place and had a lot of activities around, including hunting rare species of birds that were exclusively brought on this territory for their hobby.

The cafe served as a special spot where the two could have their coffee, and later on it was renovated to also include a special room where they could have breakfast.

While the place suffered many restorations with the passage of time, anyone coming by can still enjoy either coffee or breakfast, just like it happened a long while ago.

Even if we couldn't properly admire the nobility on the inside, the imperial mood broke any barrier and brought lots of smiles to our faces, making us sit for a while and enjoy the view before continuing our journey.

Not only the view but the thing that we ended up in a place that beautifully connects a world that ended many centuries ago with the modern times of today was so needed during our trip. And I can only be grateful for having such places well preserved and getting to enjoy them so many years later since they were born.

The full address of the Café Gloriette is Schlosspark, 1130 Wien, Austria and you can reach it either by 57A (Bus), U4 (Subway/metro), U3 60 (Tram) or Taxi, which always seems to be the most common option for the tourists.
