      Get rid of those nasty shells that add calcium and hardness to the water.
      Betta splendens live in rice paddies which are a bit acidic so your fish will suffer. @stem-shturm blogs about aquarism and recently blogged about Betta splendens. maybe you will find something useful for yourself.
