Getting a good job in Nigeria is quite difficult. Despite the educational sector of the society, if you are lucky with one even with the challenges you will still be grateful. All my life I've always wanted to have my dream job which is to become a mechanical engineer. I love fixing and solving problems, I studied hard, learned a handwork, get good grades and by God's grace I landed in a good contractor engineering company.
Starting a new job feels like you are a new character on the ninth season of a TV show. I arrived early at my workplace and meet my boss who welcome me and assigned me to my team (Mechanical Department). I also meet my mentor who is a senior engineer as well the HOD (Head of Department) he inducted and guided me through my first day.
I met my fellow colleagues who are also in the mechanical department, where I introduce myself and I must say they were friendly and welcomed me with great gesture we learn about the current project going on called PVRV (Pressure Vessel & Relief valve). There were some things that were quite different but lucky me I have good ideas about valves so it was easy for me to blend in as God so kind I was mobilized for site and was given PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
Getting to the site we did all what it takes to complete the necessary process in working in the flow station. Good for us, we went with our personal nurse it's very important lol.. We did our vitals which includes your Blood pressure, Body temperature etc. for you to be properly fit for the job after that we did our pep talk - Topic - ABC (Always Be Careful) That's very necessary in carrying out job on workplaces.
I was then assigned with a senior colleague to carry out UTM (Ultasonic Thickness Measurement) on vessels I must say it was a great experience. Ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) is a non-destructive testing method used to inspect the metal thickness of ship hulls, piping and structural steel. I learnt alot while discharging my duty by using the DMS Go (It is a machine used in carrying out the thickness of each spot in the vessel) it was really fun and stressful at the same time.
At the end of the contract I was able to understand and learn the importance of PVRV (Pressure Vessels & Relief Valves) in the industries. The most common one is our cooking gas cylinder we use at our various homes. There is a limit we can use our cooking gas and it will be due for changes. Most accident that occurs in our homes with gas is due to they've perhaps expired unknowing to us.. It leads to fatal accident. So as well in the industry is very important to Carry out these test to avoid fatal accident.
Well there's more to say but I will draw the curtain here. It's just my first day/Experience at work. I pray for Grace and wisdom to learn more. Have a lovely day guys 👋.
