Last year , I had the opportunity to spend my long break holiday at my cousin's in the historic city of Benin, Nigeria.
I've always longed to visit the city of Benin cause I've heard a lot about exploring sites and tourism centers especially the legendary Benin City Walls and Moat. I told my cousin how eager I was to visit the site and then we headed there the next weekend.
When I got there I was captivated by the ambiance of ancient mystery, my eyes beholden.
While I passed through the gate I was amused by the size of the walls and the glorious ancient artifacts guarding the stories and secrets of past centuries. I stared in oblivion and nostalgic wonder, thinking of past ancestors that once called this their place home.
Actually it wasn't just the walls that amused me , the artifact of history hidden in them as well.
At the gate we were handed over to a tour guide who guided us through the excursion and told us the history of every single artifact. We went through some secret tunnels and catacombs, each having a genuine history of the ancient Edo people. It felt like I was in an adventurous movie filled with caves, treasures myths and mysteries waiting to be unveiled
While we explored further, I was captivated by the moat that encircled the ancient city. beautifully carved out from the soil of the earth each with its remarkable accuracy . .
It was very exciting to visit a place which felt like an imaginary world , one of the most memorable moments of my visit was when I was opportune to interact with the descendants of the Benin kingdom. We spent a lot of time chatting with them ,they told stories of their great ancestors and the artifacts and how they came to be. They also entertained us with cultural dances and dramas using ancient musical instruments .Each moment was celebrating and embracing their beautiful culture, with no doubt we were highly welcomed with open arms.
It was a wonderful and unforgettable experience and I'll love to do it over and over again someday.
Thanks for reading.
