Woodwind player Chet Doxas and electronic musician Micah Frank began performing and recording together in 2018 and through a mutual love of jazz, experimental music and avant-garde compositions, formed an immediate bond that was first seen as a duo on 2019’s All the Roads.
On the upcoming album The Music of Hildegard von Bingen Part One, they bring their open-ended approach to four of von Bingen’s pieces along with one original composition. It’s an album of improvised soundscapes based on renowned nun, teacher, musician, and mystic from the late Middle Ages.
The beautifully delicate “Ave Maria” unfolds as a spacious narrative highlighting a masterful harp performance by Mary Lattimore (Ghostly International). At its onset, a lone tape loop introduces an approaching spectrum of intricate sound design. Doxas’s woodwind voice sits atop the mix with shy interspersed, melodic fragments. It's a wonderful sound, and deserves a moment of your time...
