I am a proud parent, and since my kids were born I felt that I had to be there every time for them. When my oldest was born, the nurses offered us for our daughter spend the first night in another room and they would bring her to be fed. I decided that she would spend the first night with us. It was probably the worst sleeping night in my life, but I don't regret it. Our first daughter was born in Brazil and usually, only mothers have the full leave between 4 and 6 months. The fathers can only take 5 days off. Which in my point of view is unfair.
Why unfair? We understand that the mother plays an important role with the newborn, in natural ways she is the one who is going to feed it and creates an important bond of comfort. However, fathers have become more important in the last few decades in the process and can also create an environment with less distance between a child and their father. In ancient times the father was a figure of income of the household and the women were more dedicated to raising the kids. But now the income responsibility is split and also the responsibility of raising the kids is also split in a more equal way.
When my first newborn I was responsible for most of the tasks not associated with maternal feeding. Give baths and cuddles during the night to help the baby go back to sleep after feeding. This way my wife could also sleep a bit. However, with Brazilian law allowing me only to take 5 days off I was more intense on these tasks during the weekends and holidays. In Canada, with my second child, it was a bit different. Here we have a maternity leave that is exclusive for the mother which is 15 weeks and then the parental leave which is 40 weeks in length and can be shared between the mother and father. This way we decided that I would take at least 5 weeks of parental leave.
This way I could give some rest to my wife when I was at home, in addition, it was important for my daughter to get some bonds with me. I only didn't take more because the parental leave income is much less reduced compared to my salary at that time so we had to cut our expenses a bit during that month. But even for the mother, I see it as a good benefit since they can stay more than a year with the kid since the first year is important for the kid to have their mother near them.
The laws of the two countries have different consequences in the parenting culture. In Brazil, you see a lot of parents delegating the education and children raising to babysitters, daycares, or schools since the beginning. In contrast, in Canada, you see both parents with more roles in that important job. The outcome of this job isn't money but it is an important product that represents what we are in this world.
