I have been focusing in exercises for a long time. Not because of my weight, but to maintain good vascular health since I had some health problems in 2005, and keeping a good cardio exercise frequency was good for improving my vascularization. I had never had problems with keeping a good weight until now. I reached my 40s and I noticed that if I eat many carbs I gain weight easier than before. But I noticed that reducing the snacks at work creates a good balance and I lose weight faster. Different from my wife who is calculating everyday calorie intake and being crazy about doing exercises. But what is better to lose weight?
I bought recently an Apple Watch. Mostly because I had one Amazfit with basic functions and I wanted to record my jogging, specifically the distance and minutes. But these smartwatches come also with calorie-burning tracking. I already read that different brands give you different results, but how we can trust that? Is a person focusing on losing weight should prefer one brand or another brand because of this function? Recently I watched an interesting video called the "workout paradox" from the Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell project. This project produces nice educative videos on science topics on YouTube. This video shows a summary of many scientific research that mainly what matters is the calories intake.
The video brought a research from 2015 where researchers showed that a very traditional tribe in the middle of nowhere even with its very active day, walking long distances and other types of exercises for their living, were burning the same amount of calories that a regular person in an industrialized country in a routine. The reason is that our body adapted to reduce calories burned in exercises to avoid complete calorie burnout and create huge stress for our body. If we burn all of our calories we won't be able to produce more energy. So everybody has a cap of daily burned calories which can be performed by running, dancing, or even sitting. The theory is that despite our activity levels, we will burn the same level of calories at the end of the day.
But the video also emphasizes the importance of exercises for our vasculature system health and improving general well-being, such as anti-inflammatory purposes. Even if exercises don't help a lot in reducing our weight, they are important for general health. A person over the weight usually has vascular system problems that can be improved by exercise. Still reducing calorie intake is important for losing weight. Eating fat and sugar gives some pleasure to our brains, but it is difficult to drop them out completely. Depending on how much you need to weight, it is important to maintain the focus. Be careful after reaching the target, maybe you can loose a bit of your diet, but still be careful with exaggerating.
We can compare with alcoholic drinks. Eating pizza, burgers, and candies gives us lots of pleasure like alcoholic drinks. If we are avoiding drinking, it is ok to take 3 glasses of wine weekly or 3-4 cans of beer during the weekends. But if you start drinking alcohol every day is also bad and creates addiction and health problems. The same happens with food. It is ok to eat pizza/burgers and candies 2-3 times a week. The problem is when you eat most of your meals with high caloric intakes, tonight burgers, the next day pizza, the other pasta, and so on.
We need to keep our pleasures in our life, a YouTube that I watch says "Food gives us pleasure, without it, life is so boring". But the best way to lose weight is to cut the calories off from our meals. However we still need exercise to improve our body and keep ourselves healthy. you can check out the video about the workout paradox below:
Recentemente assisti a um vídeo interessante chamado "paradoxo do treino" do projeto Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell.
