My brother is vegan. And the story how it began is pretty crazy in my opinion, it is almost a prophecy. He was in psychology school, and for some reason he went to a research lab to an intership, probably because of my influence of enjoying science. In this lab they were studying neuronal development in chicks. So they were killing chicks for that. One day he told me that he had a dream of a chick, a giant chick pursuing him and trying to eat him. After that he dropped the job and became a vegan. He didnt'want to hurt animals anymore. I love animals as well, but I would never become a vegan.
Why I am so radical on that? Because for me the only reason to become a vega is because of ideology. It doesn't make sense naturally speaking. We need to take care of nature, including the animals. But we evolved as species as omnivorous and meat meals were important for our brain evolution. Many species with high brain capacity only evolved because of the meat, ravens, octopuses even our cousins chimpanzees. Actually being omnivorous like ravens and chimps allow them a better surviving skill.
Ok, so am I being contradictory? Love animals but I am allowing a killing spree? No. Eating for surving purposes is not killing spree. I eat what I need to survive. I won't hunt a deer for sports purposes for example. But the meat that we buy in groceries are produced in a unethical ways like the vegan say? Most of that. That's why in my opinion we should the best to find local producers, local farms where we can check how the egg comes to us. Knowing that a farm raises chicken without stucking them in small cages is nice to know. Nowadays there are labels for some items like fish in the grocery store that means that fish was raised in a fish farm inspectioned and ethical. But hey, not only animal farming is dangerous for the ecossystem. Some agricultural systems are also unethical to the environment.
Another topic that the vegans bring that it somehow make sense is the lactose consuming. Yes, our bodies doesn't digest well lactose from cow milk. I stopped drinking lactose a while ago. I stopped when my daughter was diagnosed being lactose intolerant, so we don't consume since then. And I will say that removing from my diet I felt less bloating in my stomach. But I am still convicted that it is important to keep general meat in our diet. My brother and their son had many nutricional problems because of that. They tried to replace with vitamins capsules but it isn't the same. Why to transform your diet in something so unatural? But again, that is my opinion based in my belief in research articles from evolution and human metabolism.
If someone is vegan, I don't have any problems with it at the same way for those that believe in supernatural beings. It is all based on beliefs and everyone has its own. But I will never join this team since it has many contradicitons. In the other hand, I try so much to go through a more ethical feeding, avoiding some processed meals and products that misstreat the animals in their cages. Maybe that is the only critic that I have to vegans, please consider only products coming from ethical farms, not all vegan products are made in a ethical way and take care of your health, your life is more important thing that you should consider.
A maioria.
