The doctor used proper equipment to check on my spine as shown in this screenshot I took from Google. I was not able to take photo of what he did to me.

Oh yes now this quote resonates with me.

Hey, it is Wednesday again, and for today's #wednesdaywalk, I want to document an unusual experience that I have recently been through.

On Monday, I realized that my shoulder hurt and it had a shorter range of mobility. I had difficulty turning my head to the left. Thinking it was just waking up at the wrong side of the bed, I thought I would feel better with some anti pain plasters or bandages on the hurtful spot. Usually, that would be sufficient for me to feel better.

This time round, it did not help.

What aggravated it further was on Monday night, my overstimulated youngest son cried in his sleep and demanded to be carried for about 5 times in a span of 2 hour sleep. He leaned on the hurting side of the shoulder, so I guess it worsened the pain.

On Tuesday, I wanted to just go about my errands and classes with the pain. I could barely turn my head at this point, and I felt like I was walking like a bird with my head slanted to one side. After the first class, I decided to finally visit the chiropractor, which I have delayed for the longest time because I did not want to spend.

I messaged Elevate Gonstead Chiropractic to understand some details and costs for their first visit. I have followed @josephinengpy to her usual chiropractic visit when she was treated by this same chiropractic doctor before he opened up his own clinic with his girlfriend, which is this Elevate I have seen how non-intrusive and gentle the treatment was, so I guess after much contemplation, I resorted to them. Chiropractor visit is something I wanted to do all this while because I know my body has greatly misaligned after I went through 2 pregnancies with 2 natural labour. Also, I have had a problem with my posture since I was young because I tend to slouch. I do have aches here and there and especially after giving birth.

Hence, I made my appointment at 2 pm and went ahead like FINALLY FINALLY.

Arrived at Elevate

Elevate is thankfully located very near the place I stay. It is about 5 minutes drive and it was so happened on my way back from my first class. The Gonstead method is the type requiring X-ray so they can pinpoint the real problem on the spine after analysing the X-ray films. They will not be treated without films.

I simply love the minimalistic setting in this clinic. Everything looked so clean and simple. There is a small pantry and water dispenser for the awaiting patients. Everything was painted in white.

At the moment, the only practitioner here are Dr Goh and his girlfriend, Dr. Mandy. Both are really friendly people. They learned about my acute situation over my communication with them on WhatsApp, so after filling in the registration form, I was asked to go for a first consultation with Dr. Goh. He was very earnest in listening to my problems, and he did a primary check to find out that the tendons on his left shoulder were swelling. He pre diagnosed it could be the tendon pressing the pain nerves, hence causing the pain, there must be a misalignment somewhere. He sent me a referral letter to get an X-ray done with their panel hospital.

X-ray procedure at Hospital Ampang Puteri

This hospital is a 10-minute drive away from the chiropractor clinic. They even sent me a video on how to get to the imaging department, how thoughtful of them. So I met some friendly staff who led me to the department, registered and paid. It was my turn very soon after, so I got ushered to a room to change into my X-ray robe. I had to remove everything with metal on, including my specs and rings.

The radiologist instructed me to stand in front of their equipment and looked towards the wall. It seemed like a breeze until they could not take the image of the first bone of the spine, which is located behind the mouth or tongue. They asked me to open my mouth wide and tried to adjust my angle but to no avail. Another staff member came to help, but still it was not a success. Finally they got their head of department (probably) and got me to sit down on a stool to try it again. They explained that different people may have to be angled differently. I really opened my mouth probably 10 times for it to be taken. I was laughing.

Finally got the films and paid RM190 for it and headed back to Elevate. Dr Goh and Dr Mandy followed up closely with me on the wait for films and they even extended their opening hours just to wait for me to be back at their clinic to treat me.

Back at Elevate

With the X-ray films, Dr Goh managed to analyse and relaized that my left pelvic looked bigger than my rightN which means my tailbone slanted towards my right. The whole spine is supposedly to curve but mine has misaligned quite a bit until my another radiologist close friend who is the head of Radiology Department of another district said it seemed I have mild scoliosis.

Anyway Dr. Goh mentioned we need to start adjusting before it get worse. Usually we ignore the problem until it flares up like mine in great pain. He managed to identify a few bones to start with some adjustment first. He was really gentle and he gave clear instructions to prepare me for what to anticipate. When he "cracked" my T 5 bone, immediately I felt the release of tension and I could move my head to the left. He also adjusted the tailbone and the pelvic or hip side.

Difference between Bone Setter and Chiropractor

Many people warned me about chiropractor or even suggested to try bone setter or tuina ( Chinese massage), but I went for this, though it may be the more expensive option. I feel more right to go for this, and after all, I do want to realign my body after my pregnancies and deliveries. Dr Goh explained that Chiropractor is a field of medical studies with always the reference to X-ray films to really identify the culprit and they go through 4 years of degree course in the university to actually learn and practice while bone setter and tuina may be knowledge passed down from masters to apprentices.

I spent altogether nearly 3 hours getting all these done.

I paid RM300 for the first consultation and visit. With the X-ray, I spent RM490. Will be going back on Sunday for a subsequent follow-up treatment. Dr. Goh texted me today to check on my progress. He reminded me to not carry heavy loads but when he knows I have a 3-year-old that may still need to be carried, he said he didn't know how to ask me to avoid that but do it slowly.

The cause was perhaps too much load was on me and I always thought I could carry many things at one go especially when I stay in a 3 floor walk up apartment and I tried to carry everything at one go so I need not walk up and down the stairs several times. Now I gotta remember to lessen the load, perhaps, which I don't know how to. With the many carrying of things to send my boys out and my own things and the house trash, I am usually full with my hands every time I step out of the house.

I came home to tell my 3-year-old that I was in pain and may not be able to carry him. He asked what bout carrying him on the right side. I said maybe I could pat him instead. He came to pray for me, and I was thankful, but I said I still can not carry him when he cries. I can pat him to comfort him. He thought a while, and he said, "Hmm, but I still want to cry." Last night, he did request to carry him in his sleep, but he was satisfied when I cradled him on my lap sitting on the bed. Thank you, son.

I can finally sleep without pain and raise my left arm to wash my hair!!! It was a significant improvement through a gentle treatment.
