The cancellation culture is a phenomenon characterized by the collective act of withdrawing support or "cancelling" people due to comments or actions deemed "offensive" or questionable. Often, this results in a type of "group bullying" where numerous people join together to attack or disqualify the opinions of others, which can lead to serious consequences such as loss of freedom of expression and social ostracism.
In some cases, the cancellation culture can manifest itself through silence, i.e., ignoring and not interacting with the person or content in question. This can be just as effective as more visible actions, as the silence of a community can send a powerful, yet dangerous, message. You never know when it will be your turn where terror, fear and manipulation reign.
This form of censorship can generate a lack of understanding and tolerance for other people's opinions, as it demonstrates that only the "mass opinion" matters. Yes, in fascism, the leader is often presented as a representative of the people, whose actions are for the benefit of the nation or community. However, these actions may be more aligned with the leader's personal desires than with the real needs of the community.
Here Max Weber's concept of charismatic domination may be relevant. According to Weber, a charismatic leader has an extraordinary influence over his followers, who attribute almost supernatural qualities to him. This type of leadership can lead to a relationship in which the masses subordinate themselves to the leader, accepting his decisions as their own. He does not have to be very charismatic, (Sometimes, he is not even charismatic... 🤣). Blackmail and economic manipulation can be enough to make everyone decide to keep quiet and give in to the claims of the minority.
It is important to remember that a leader's influence is not always negative; leaders can mobilize the masses for positive social change. However, when a leader manipulates the masses to serve his or her own interests, especially under the pretense of acting "for and by the community," it can be a sign of authoritarian and fascist tendencies. Yes, I said.
"I'm quiet, I don't get into trouble and I try to keep a low profile. It can't happen to me. I only come to earn money"
Beware, the cancellation culture is not limited to public figures with a large following; any individual can be subject to cancellation. Even if you are very loyal to an ideal.
Yes, it can happen to you
The expression "the revolution eats its children" refers to a historical phenomenon where a revolution, after achieving its initial goals, begins to purge its own members and leaders. This process can be the result of internal power struggles, paranoia, or the desire to eliminate those who might threaten the established structure. Which, if you think about it, might not be the best for the community.
A historical example of this is the Great Purge in the Soviet Union under Stalin, where thousands of Communist Party members, including many of its original revolutionary leaders, were executed or sent to forced labor camps. These purges were justified as a necessity to eliminate "enemies of the people" and consolidate power, but were often based on trumped-up charges and rigged trials.
Another case is the Terror of Robespierre during the French Revolution, where even central figures of the revolution, such as Robespierre himself, ended up being victims of the "order" that they themselves, in a way, had helped to establish. I had something similar happen to me within a community in, but I won't talk about it, just look at my blog and you'll know who I'm referring to. 😄
These events show how the system can turn on those who once supported or led it, often in an attempt to maintain control. The purging of the system, therefore, can be seen as a form of communal self-cannibalism, where a community devours its own creators in a cycle of violence and repression.
HIVE AVOID IT... If you believe in it.
Hive is a decentralized Blockchain that has created a vibrant and mature ecosystem. Just like a revolution, where the community comes together to bring about change, Hive relies on the active participation of its members to build a decentralized future. How do they relate to the culture of cancellation and purging?
Decentralization:
Hive is a blockchain where there is no CEO or central entity controlling the network. This prevents a single authority from making unilateral decisions and allows the community to actively participate in governance.
Decentralization in Hive is critical to prevent the community from "eating its children." By distributing power and decision making, a more resilient and participatory system is created.
DPoS Consensus (Delegated Participation Test):
- Hive uses the DPoS algorithm, which allows HIVE coin holders to participate in consensus and community-relevant decisions.
- Witnesses" are responsible for validating transactions and creating new blocks. This inclusive and decentralized process improves the scalability and security of the network.
Layers of Hive:
- Hive has a base layer (layer 0) where the community makes the blockchain possible. Layer 1 is fundamental for transaction logging and network security.
- This robust and flexible structure enables development at the second layer, where communities can create custom applications and have greater control over their accounts and content.
But only if you believe in it.... 😁
Hive empowers Web3 communities by giving them autonomy and control over their online destiny. Decentralization, and active participation are key elements to avoid "purging the system" and build a more equitable and resilient environment.
The trust and belief of a community's members in its principles and structure are fundamental to the success of any decentralized system. However, *the influence of money on freedom of expression and decision making is a delicate and complex issue.
In decentralized communities like Hive, equal distribution of power and decision-making is expected to prevent concentration of power. But if a leader or a small group of individuals accumulate sufficient capital, they could potentially influence the decisions of the majority, manipulating governance in their favor. This could undermine the principles of equality and freedom of expression that are fundamental to the community. Media concentration, and thus concentration of economic power, can undermine democracy and the ability of all members to exercise their right to freedom of opinion and expression.
Therefore, it is crucial that decentralized communities implement mechanisms that ensure transparency, accountability and equitable participation of all members to maintain the integrity and values of the community. This includes creating fair voting systems, and promoting a culture of openness and constructive dialogue. Have you tried the pools yet? Wooo, I love that. I think it will help create more liquid, decentralized and open communities.
In short, although decentralization offers many advantages to avoid concentration of power and censorship, any community must always be vigilant and committed to its principles to ensure that these are not undermined by the influence of money or leaders with personal agendas. Read the rules of each space, respect them, but if you don't like them do yourself a favor and..... get out.
No matter how evil others are, no matter how much of a freeloader they are, i dont give fuck. But for how I see it, Hive is freedom, creativity, knowledge, development, decentralization and a place of opportunities. Keep it that way.
