What True Love Is

The sun was setting in the west,
You were nowhere to be found;
Alone was I, but in my breast,
Memories sweet, in sweet rebound.
Was fond of your soft voice's touch;
We were always, I felt that day,
Always and forever, nonesuch
Friends!—that no one stood in our way.
In winter's silent grasp, I ponder
Upon our little walk together,
The Lethied waters heard beyond her,
Yet shall not taste—nor soon forget her!
A future saw with her—perchance—
If ever fainly look'd inside
Our past, the sweet remember'd glance,
That truth eternal, eyes implied.
The sun is setting in the south,
What true love is I scribble down:
Lost! in what pours not from that mouth,
Within your eyes, your eyes of brown.
