Hace algún tiempo que vi esta película y por algún motivo olvidé haberla visto y no encuentro motivo alguno para haberlo hecho, es tremenda película de Netflix (basada en hechos reales), sobre la vida de la cantante y arista Ma Rainey, apodada la reina del blues por muchos.

El film narra la historia del día en que ella y su banda se reúnen en un estudio de grabación en Chicago donde se desarrolla la mayor parte de la película, es en ese lugar donde vemos como abordan la narrativa de lo que aconteció durante aquella sesión de grabación que pasó a ser una de las más recordadas de cantante, a tal punto, que fue presentada como una película, de la cual hoy quiero hablarles.

It's been some time since I saw this movie and for some reason I forgot to have seen it and I can't find any reason to have done so, it's tremendous movie from Netflix (based on true events), about the life of the singer and harp player Ma Rainey, nicknamed the queen of the blues by many.

The film tells the story of the day she and her band meet in a recording studio in Chicago where most of the film takes place, it is in that place where we see how they approach the narrative of what happened during that recording session that became one of the most remembered of singer, to such an extent, that it was presented as a film, which today I want to talk to you about.

La película es un drama de comienzo a fin, son muchos los momentos en los que se refleja el aspecto dramático porque existe cierta fricción entre el personaje principal, Ma Rainey, que interpreta maravillosamente bien la actriz Viola Davis y el personaje de Chadwick Boseman, aunque en el desarrollo del film, podrán ver que no solo existe esa tensión entre ambos sino también con gran parte de los personajes alrededor de ella.

Toda la película es ambientada en los últimos años de la década de los 1920, en una Chicago industrial y con auge para la nueva onda del blues que está por tomar por sorpresa a la escena artística de los Estados Unidos y del mundo entero, siendo ese país el encargado de ver nacer este nuevo ritmo musical que trae a artistas como Ma Rainey a ser grandes estrellas de la música.

The film is a drama from beginning to end, there are many moments in which the dramatic aspect is reflected because there is some friction between the main character, Ma Rainey, played wonderfully well by the actress Viola Davis and the character of Chadwick Boseman, although in the development of the film, you will see that there is not only that tension between them but also with many of the characters around her.

The whole film is set in the late 1920s, in an industrial Chicago and with a boom for the new wave of blues that is about to take by surprise the artistic scene of the United States and the whole world, being that country the one in charge of seeing the birth of this new musical rhythm that brings artists like Ma Rainey to be big stars of the music.

La carga actoral está mayormente entre Davis y Boseman quienes logran hacer un dúo interesante, aunque como lo mención antes, la fricción entre ambos crea un ambiente pesado para el resto de las escenas en las que trabajan juntos; ambos son soberbios, orgullosos y creen merecer el primer lugar y reconocimiento en todo, se anteponen ante los demás y van por encima de lo que sea con tal de obtener lo que quieren.

Viola Davis nunca deja de sorprenderme, la mujer es una caja de sorpresas y cada vez que en un film abres esa caja, es un trabajo distinto al anterior; capta cada emoción que mencioné con una naturalidad que me hace creer que esa misma puede llegar a ser un forma de actuar fuera del personaje, olvidé que era ella y la reemplacé por Ma Rainey, hasta que conocí a la verdadera Ma Rainey. Su actuación mereció mayor atención.

Para mi, era la primera vez que veía actuar a Chadwick Boseman en una película, no soy seguidor de Marvel para nada, así que no tengo previa referencia de algún trabajo cinematográfico de su parte, hasta que pude conocer al actor detrás del nombre y la verdad fue inesperada su actuación, en mi opinión. Sin duda fue bueno no haber visto nunca un trabajo previo porque me dio la oportunidad de verlo actuar por primera vez en un papel que demandaba bastante de él como actor y lo cumplió a cabalidad.

The acting load is mostly between Davis and Boseman who manage to make an interesting duo, although as I mentioned before, the friction between the two creates a heavy atmosphere for the rest of the scenes in which they work together; both are arrogant, proud and believe they deserve the first place and recognition in everything, they put themselves before others and go above anything to get what they want.

Viola Davis never ceases to amaze me, the woman is a box of surprises and every time in a film you open that box, it's a different job than the previous one; she captures every emotion I mentioned with a naturalness that makes me believe that same can become a way of acting out of character, I forgot it was her and replaced her with Ma Rainey, until I met the real Ma Rainey. Her performance deserved more attention.

For me, it was my first time seeing Chadwick Boseman act in a movie, I'm not a Marvel follower at all, so I have no prior reference to any film work on his part, until I got to meet the actor behind the name and truth be told it was unexpected his performance, in my opinion. It was certainly a good thing I had never seen any previous work because it gave me the opportunity to see him perform for the first time in a role that demanded a lot from him as an actor and he delivered in spades.

El elenco en general me llamó la atención y por eso quise ver la película, nunca había escuchado hablar de Ma Rainey y fue por medio de la película que supe de su relevancia para el mundo musical, fue pionera entre las mujeres negras más famosas del blues y su éxito sin duda la hizo reconocida en el mundo entero.

La ambientación del film en los años 20's fue espectacular, toda la escena estuvo repleta de cómo era la vida en esos años, el estudio de grabación fue para mi lo más increíble de todo, el uso de los equipos de grabación de esos años, el método en el que se debía grabar cada canción, el proceso técnico para hacerlo, en fin, todo el lugar y las escenas que recrearon ahí hicieron que conociéramos como se hacían las cosas en un estudio de grabación en esos años.

Un guión interesante que mostraba la realidad de una mujer negra, normalmente marginada por la sociedad de aquellos años, pero con un talento inigualable y capaz de atraer masas de todos colores y hacerlos sentir cada palabra que cantaba ferozmente con su voz, al ritmo del nuevo sonido del blues.

The cast in general caught my attention and that's why I wanted to see the film, I had never heard of Ma Rainey and it was through the film that I learned of her relevance to the musical world, she was a pioneer among the most famous black women of the blues and her success undoubtedly made her recognized worldwide.

The setting of the film in the 20's was spectacular, the whole scene was full of how life was in those years, the recording studio was for me the most incredible of all, the use of recording equipment of those years, the method in which each song had to be recorded, the technical process to do it, in short, the whole place and the scenes that recreated there made us know how things were done in a recording studio in those years.

An interesting script that showed the reality of a black woman, normally marginalized by the society of those years, but with an incomparable talent and capable of attracting masses of all colors and making them feel every word she sang fiercely with her voice, to the rhythm of the new blues sound.

El tiempo de la película es bueno, 1 hora y medio y abordan bastante de lo ocurrido en aquella sesión de grabación, el tiempo de duración transcurrió casi sin darme cuenta ya que como, prácticamente, todo el film ocurre en un solo lugar, es difícil notar el paso del tiempo, lo cual hace que no te preocupe el tiempo sino que disfrutas de la película.

Tal vez no es el trabajo de ambos actores que el resto de las personas recuerden cuando les sean mencionados sus nombres durante alguna conversación, pero en mi caso creo que si lo será (al menos si con Chadwick Boseman) porque me parece que fue de gran altura sus interpretaciones.

Mi recomendación es que no dejen pasarla porque hay más de lo que a simple vista parecer ser de esta película, el titulo y la sinopsis que encuentren online son solo un abre boca de lo que hay en el resto del film.

The running time of the movie is good, 1 hour and a half and they address quite a bit of what happened in that recording session, the running time went by almost without me noticing since, since, practically, the whole film takes place in one place, it is difficult to notice the passage of time, which makes you not worry about the time but enjoy the movie.

Maybe it's not the job of both actors that the rest of the people remember when their names are mentioned during a conversation, but in my case I think it will be (at least if with Chadwick Boseman) because I think it was of great height their interpretations.

My recommendation is that you don't pass it up because there is more to this film than meets the eye, the title and synopsis you find online are just a teaser for what is in the rest of the film.
