Cats have it all
admiration, an endless sleep, and company only when they want it. - Rod McKuen-
As we travelled through Morocco, I couldn't help but notice the abundance of cats in every city we visited. It seemed they were part of Moroccan culture, as many locals fed and looked after them with great care.
Our first stop was at a coastal town, Essaouira, known for its picturesque harbour and ancient medina. Here, the cats wandered freely, sitting on walls, and lying in the sun. You couldn't help but feel a sense of calm watching them stretch out lazily on the carpet.
Asafi and Casablanca were next on our list, and while these cities were more modern and busier than some of the others we had visited, the cats still made their presence. Between the high skyscrapers and crowded streets, they walked in and out of traffic, almost as if they owned the city.
We visited the charming town, Chefchaouen. Here, the cats seemed to blend seamlessly with the faded blue walls, appearing almost as guardians of the town.
As we wandered through the hustling souks, the winding alleys lined with vibrant textiles, colourful ceramics, and artwork. Cats scrambled for treats among the marketplace stalls, running in and out of the shadows cast by the flickering fabric.
Our journey then took us to the enchanting city of Fes, with its winding, maze-like medina and ancient architecture. Here, the cats looked out from the shadows of the high walls and intricate archways, keeping an eye on the masses of tourists and locals.
As our journey through Morocco came to the end, I couldn't help but wonder at the abundant occurrence of the cats. It was like they were intertwined into the very fabric of the country's culture, lending their smooth and mysterious presence to the sights, sounds, and smells of every city we visited.
