One of the most interesting monuments in the city of Havana is "The Obelisk", located in the center of the traffic circle where 100th Street and the huge 31st Avenue intersect. All the inhabitants of the municipality of Marianao know it, and they should feel proud that such an architectural ensemble is erected in their place of residence.
When I learned that this work was made in honor of the renowned Cuban physician Carlos J. Finlay, who was the talented doctor who made studies and several analyses on the aedes aegypti mosquito and its influence on the transmission of the dangerous yellow fever disease, I understood why the syringe shape of the mosquito, which can be defined when observing the place from afar. Finlay was very important for the country because he dedicated his life to study and search for a cure to the most lethal diseases of the time. I had passed by that place hundreds of times, and I did not know the beautiful history that is intertwined within its walls.

This impressive work is more than 30 meters high, and its base is made of jaimanite stones and bronze. On one of its sides there is a plaque that indicates that it is dedicated to the renowned doctor, with the date of his birth and death.
I took several photographs of each side, which show images of animals such as horses and bulls, as well as half-naked men from another era with athletic and defined bodies, dressed in tunics like the ancient Romans.
One of the most interesting things about this site is that the monument culminates with a very unique lighthouse that once served as a guide for the orientation of military aircraft landing or taking off from Columbia Airport.

The Obelisk is surrounded by four buildings with incredible architecture, and as the style of construction is very similar, it makes for a fascinating architectural ensemble.
One of the buildings currently constitutes the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts. This, like the rest of the buildings, has two floors, with large white windows. Its facade is impressive with thick paired columns. In front of the school there is an irregularly shaped tile, on a base of two steps.

I was surprised by a very strange figure that adjoins the study center, and is part of its courtyard, which is a kind of big rock covered with flowers and colors. I am not sure, but I think it symbolizes that it is possible to find art and life anywhere, in anything. Also the big metal door to access this area is peculiar.

The other buildings surrounding the obelisk are the polytechnic of economy Lázaro Ramón Alpizar; the basic secondary school Conrado Duany Pulido and an old people's home. All these places have the same color scheme and very similar facades.
Particularly the school of economics has one of its areas in the shape of a semicircle, which is a style of construction that I like very much, it always looks different.

Yes friend, I enjoyed it a lot. I have passed by that syringe-shaped obelisk so many times and I feel very proud because it was a Cuban doctor who inspired that obelisk. All the buildings around it are great. Very good post 👍🏽👍🏽

Excellent photograph of the Obelisk, the truth is that if design is very original with its lighthouse at the tip, excellent architecture of the buildings that support it, thank you dear Indira for sharing this excellent architectural work, happy day 🌹🌷🌼🪷🌸🪻🥀💮💐🌻🌺☘️

It is an impressive architectural ensemble, and each building is very well integrated with the other. Even though these buildings have a different use value, they are very well preserved

It brings back many memories of your photos from when I lived in Havana 🥰. Thanks for the tour friend. An infinite embrace 😘💜

The pillar made me remember several places in the temple and several images of ancient Greek buildings that I often saw on television. Thank you for sharing a place like this.

The architectural ensemble is very interesting, it was very well designed. Thank you for your comment @isdarmady, it is a pleasure for me to receive it
