GDPR fine of $225M announced on Whatsapp

Now a days WhatsApp has now become an easy way of communication. Its regraded as an alternative to SMS. WhatsApp came in existence in the year 2014. WhatsApp developed to communicate to people through chatting rather than talking on call.

The Irelands Data Watchdog has fined WhatsApp with a fine of $225M for breaching the privacy regulations. It regarded as the largest fine ever from the Irish Data Protection Commission and it helds second largest under EU GDPR Rules.

Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, has its EU headquarters is in Ireland, and the Irish regulator is the lead authority for the tech giant in Europe.

What is Data Privacy Commission?


The Data Privacy Commission is regarded as the national independent authority that is developed to solve the fundamental rights of the citizens in EU in accordance to protect the personal data. The DPC is an Irish Supervisory Authority for the GDPR.

How WhatsApp was fined?


The Irish Authorities have fined WhatsApp for not being transparent regrading the data collected from the people on service. It  followed by the lengthy investigation and enforcement process that has started from 2018. As well as it looks after the transparency related to the platform it offers over its sharing of the data with the parent entity Facebook.  It involved the DPC''s proposed decision. Therefore, the sanctions rejected by the European Data Protection Regulatory Board.

The DPC gathered the mutual assistance consent from the German Data Regulator as well. The request related to the privacy obligations where in the personal data shared through WhatsApp as well as the variety of Facebook affiliated companies. A key principle of the GDPR is that entities processed people�s data must be clear, open and honest with those people about how their information  used.
