Hello everyone and all members of Hive Pets Community, how are you today? May we all always be given health and happiness in living this life. This time, I want to participate again in this community to share stories about my beloved cat and some animal welfare issues that are happening in my country, Indonesia.
As you know, I have an orange cat named Kepin. Kepin stays at home more often when he wants to sleep and always pees in the place that I have provided. In addition to pins, several cats that roam around my house also often come to my house to get dry food cat, such as this one striped cat named Bocil.
Two days ago, I had to separate bocils and pins who were fighting for food at my house. The two of them played and fought until they made annoying noises. I hastily separated the two cats so as not to disturb my neighbors too much. These days, I've become a little paranoid about the plight of the cats around my life. During this week, the news of violence against animals is a topic that is currently being debated.
Animal Violence on Social Media
A few days ago, in Indonesia there were two cases of animal abuse that occurred in Indonesia which occurred in close proximity. First, the case of one of the law enforcement officers who bathed a cat with hot water because he was annoyed that the cat had entered his house and almost preyed on his pet bird. The second case was a group of teenagers carrying out the most heinous acts of animal cruelty I have ever seen, namely setting firecrackers in a cat's anus. These two cases can go viral because they have something in common, namely uploading videos on social media.

I once read a journal and news from the animal welfare organization Asia For Animals Coalition, Indonesia is the number one country in the world that uploads animal abuse content on social media. Thousands of animal violence content has been uploaded on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Why does this barbarity keep happening? Why do many people feel happy and want to go viral by torturing animals?
Low Concern for Animal Violence
The fact that we can see is that the high rate of violence against animals shows that the awareness of the Indonesian people about animal welfare is still very low. This variety of torture content on social media shows us that animal welfare issues are not important.
Torture of cats, dogs or other animals is usually caused by several things. First, many people with low awareness and concern torture animals for pleasure and for laughter. Laughter requires an object of suffering, and some of these uncivilized people treat cats and dogs as objects of suffering and laugh at the state of these animals suffering. This may seem trivial and entertaining, but torture of animals has a close relationship with torture of humans. Many cases of murder, psychopathy and violence occurred because when they were children they often abused animals.
The second reason that is often said by some people who torture animals is because the animal (cat or dog) does things such as stealing food, destroying the garden, or urinating indiscriminately in their home territory. Since childhood, I have often seen some parents splash hot water when a cat is fighting or a cat is mating (cats that want to mate are usually very noisy). There is also a case of beating a dog to death because the dog entered his house. Even though this problem is very trivial, we can just evict the animal and file a complaint with the owner. This problem may also be caused by being mentally unstable and only having violent solutions to stop or prevent it.
In Indonesia, violence against animals can be reported to the police or the authorities and the animal rescue community. However, this solution is not enough to require direct awareness from the community to prevent, reduce or eliminate violent activities against animals. We all know that any violence against animals has the potential that in the future it will happen to humans. Let's start with ourselves, reminding those around us about it and also imparting knowledge to children and the next generation.
