Happy Sunday, Hivers! Yesterday was the International Coastal Cleanup day, a movement organized by non governmental organizations, to be conducted every third Saturday of September.
It's my first time to volunteer in environmental activities, more particularly, coastal clean ups. Prior to the clean up event, all participants were invited to a google meeting for the briefing. Call time, what to bring, transportation arrangements, etc. Unfortunately, i wasn't able to join the meeting and forgot to bring a jacket. I didn't expect the weather to be so hot despite our call time of 6 AM.
Growing up, I was never an environmentalist as i have very minimal knowledge about our ecosystem and how trashes, when not thrown properly, affects our quality of life. Having an urban lifestyle that barely allows me to be near the sea and beaches also adds a factor for my illiteracy.
Since our company is in the line of providing water resources, may it be potable or non potable (such as recycled waste water), part of our corporate social responsibility to the community is to maintain cleanliness in our surroundings.
We arrived at the Water Desalination Plant where we will have the coastal cleanup. The organizers prepared tools such as work gloves, short and long gravel rakes, hand soaps and sanitizers, and refreshments. There were local residences and LGUs who volunteered too.
After a short orientation, we are now ready to start the coastal clean up!
Each of us were assigned an empty sack which serves as our garbage bags. We were designated at an abandoned area near the plant.
I must say, coastal clean up is a real work. We were all soaked in sweat and mud the whole time. We even found a decaying animal in the corner, wherein the smell spread upon touching it.
But despite the discomfort, the whole experience was eye opening and very fulfilling. Doing the right things for the community, no matter how small, will always make a difference, if all of us do the same. I hope you did your part in making a change for our environment too.
