I Get By with a Little Help from My Friends

I love the aphorisms for getting on in years, don't you? We're getting to "a ripe old age," We are maturing. Aging like a fine wine. Mellowing!

And if you're like me, you're possibly also becoming a teensy bit more accident prone. It's for good reason. Our peripheral vision simply does not improve with age. Our balance isn't what it once was. We're more tippy.

A few weeks ago, I was out on a lovely walk and had a rather bad fall. (I've documented this in previous blog posts, like this one, so won't belabor that aspect of it.)

Now I'm in recovery mode. I had foot surgery last week, because I actually broke two bones in my foot in the process. (Warning, I'm going to show the X-rays later in this post, so avert your eyes if medical stuff is not your thing!)

Anyway, now it's all about pain management (which is getting better day by day, thank you), and staying off of it while it heals. Do you ever see those people riding around on little scooters that just support one knee? Yeah, if you've seen one you've seen them all.

Okay, fine. Since you asked, I'll show you what I looked like while out using the leaf blower on my driveway the other day. What a hoot, huh?

Back to the Title of This Post

What happens after you have an icky accident is that you realize how much you love your friends and your family, and that people actually care! I was just so charmed by the lovely messages on Hive and Facebook, and the sweet cards, gifts, wine and flowers. People are so lovely!

Look at the adorable Halloween basket my sister brought me. It was full of all kinds of chocolates!

IMG_1037.jpg

She also brought me this cute little basket, which has lavender bath salts in it, along with a bottle of wine.

IMG_1038.jpg

And some other friends stopped by with flowers, cards and wine too. Aren't they the sweetest?

IMG_1208.jpg

But the creme-de-la-creme was definitely my brother-in-law, @preparedwombat, who is the absolute coolest. He brought us dinner not once, but twice! The first time was right after the injury, and the second was the night of the surgery. So he absolutely wins the Best BIL award!

Naturally, I made him pose with his fabulous baked ziti, which is so scrumptious and out of this world!

This song is dedicated to you, @preparedwombat!

The X-Rays

Another thing I'm feeling incredibly grateful for is good health care. I have a good job, good benefits, and a health savings account, which I mostly don't need to use. So it's there when I really need it. I'm also very fortunate to live in a country where we have good healthcare in general.

I was really impressed with the urgent care staff who took care of me right after the injury. And the surgeon who operated on my foot and put some little pins in place was truly awesome too.

Without further ado, here are the pics.

This is the first X-ray, from the day of my injury.

IMG_0843.jpg

I was expecting them to give me a boot and send me home with painkillers (like the last time, when I broke a bone in the other foot — also out on a hike), but no. They said I needed a follow up with a podiatrist, and most likely needed surgery for the bones to heal correctly.

So I went around in a boot for a few days until the appointment with the doc, and then he scheduled me for surgery. He said I could wing it and hope they would heal pretty well, but the surgery would make sure they did, and the healing would be faster. That settled that!

Surgery went great. I got a nice big bandage around my foot and a sandal to go over that.

IMG_1192.jpg

And then today I went in for my first post-op follow-up. They X-ray'd my foot again to make sure everything was in alignment for healing, and then re-bandaged it.

This, to me, is the coolest image ever. Look what they can do these days to get your bones to align and heal properly!

Hello @jayna, I had a long time without greeting you, I am glad to hear from you and know that you are recovering from an operation, I would have liked to have other news from you, that you were traveling around the world or enjoying nature, but I am content with knowing that you are already better and being spoiled by family and friends.

I really liked the pictures of the x-ray, I like the details and if they go all the way to the bones even better hahaha. Amazing the work of doctors and science.

A warm hug wait a bit before you start running through the woods.

Wonderful to hear from you too, @soyunasantacruz. I hope all is well with you!

I love the x-rays too. I'm glad I'm not the only one! I look at the one with the little metal strips and the screws and it's so darn cute — like a patched up teddy bear — that I just want to give it a hug. Ha ha.

Yes, I need to run through the woods. That will happen this coming winter, once the doctor says it's okay to walk on it!

😅🤣😜🤗🥰

@tipu curate

😍 Thanks @ninahaskin!

It's good to have supportive family and friends when something like this happens. I hope the bones in your foot heal soon.

Thanks very much, @kaazoom!

Oh @jayna ,

The next time I need to show someone how to turn a negative into a positive, I will refer them to this post. How can you write a blog about a broken foot and surgery, and at the end I feel better?

Great piece. Makes me firmer in my decision to go out and do something for someone today, maybe even for myself.

Love the leaf blower picture, and the brother-in-law with ziti :)

Thank you so much, dear friend. I have had a few miserable days along the way, as you know. But it's just not me to hold onto the negative. I'm getting better every day. And I do remind myself that so many people struggle with much worse. This will mend! I have an awesome husband to support me, and great kids and wonderful friends. I am truly blessed.

Ouch. I wish you a quick recovery. That is some crazy X-ray photos.

Hi @enjar. How are you doing? Thanks for the good wishes!

I’m doing decent.

Grinding hard in an event in a game atm that lasts for over a week so that is keeping mem quite busy.

These bones, looks so cool.
They're really with the Halloween theme 🎃

I hadn't thought of that. You're absolutely right, @seki1!

Partially bionic woman partially well matured, great to see you back on track healing that foot.

Lovely when friends and family spoil you, doing the garden on that knee scooter looks like you learned new tricks at the same time....

!LUV

Ha ha, yes, I'm always learning new tricks @joanstewart! It's going to be interesting getting through security on future flights. 😄

I thought I recognised this post! I even commented on it! 😜You b-i-l is a star! I must have forgotten how you broke your foot... that is quite possible given the last few years of craziness in my life 💗.

Hi Jayna! I am so glad that everything went very well with your foot surgery and I hope that you will soon be fully recovered. It's amazing the advances in science and the treatments we can have today in so many areas.
And well, with age we don't get rid of the desire to be spoiled, do we? I'm glad that family and friends have done their part.

Thank you!

So easy to do as we get older, and so lovely to have friends and family around you! Nothing like someone making a bit of a fuss over you to help the healing on its way 😍.

I'm impressed with the little wagon for getting round on one leg. Is it possible to get hold of one without the qualifying fall? 😁

The x-rays are fascinating!

Hi @shanibeer! So great to hear from you! I hope you're doing well. Glad to hear people are fascinated by the x-rays vs. repulsed. Ha ha.

Hello. So sorry to hear you had a fall and needed surgery. The breaks are so distinguishable. You can readily see them. Feels painful just looking at it :(

I understand completely about the senior citizen years. My mobility has taken a turn this past year. I now have a foldable cane that accompanies me everywhere. I no longer go grocery shopping as I can't stand more than twenty minutes on my knees due to severe arthritis. Total hip replacement has now been recommended, but I don't see myself going down that route.

My hubby is my savior. My own personal shopper, chauffeur, and calendar keeper. He does it all. It's family and friends you can count on when needed that makes the difference.

Take care of yourself. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Oh no, @justclickindiva. You are such a positive person, it's hard to imagine you dealing with the mobility issues (and unmentioned pain!!). So sorry, but we press on, don't we, because what is the alternative?🌺

Take care of yourself, truly.

Hello. Yes, mobility has struck. Together with underlying health issues due to Type 2 Diabetes, they are slowing me own as far as my RV vacationing and general travel.

I remember a couple years ago sitting at my desktop publishing three to four posts a day, including weekly stories for InkWell. I've found that nagging pain and stiffening after a few idle hours online interrupts my creative flow.

But, as you say, we do press on. We can't even consider the alternative. Not yet. I'll reassess my online presence next year. Right now, I'm still trying to enjoy writing a bit, but mostly my art projects (including collages) help to channel and calm my thoughts.

Thanks so much for checking on me. I appreciate it.

Wishing you the best.

Oh I hope you consider the hip replacement, @justclickindiva. I know so many people who have done it and wish they hadn't waited so long. It might really give you the energy and comfort to get around (which is of course a help to diabetes too). Please take care of yourself. A big hug to you! And I'm SO happy you have a great hubby to help you.

I will. Thanks for the advice and your kind words. I've heard of numerous people having the surgery also. Mixed results. It's something to consider carefully.

Take care of yourself too.

Cool bones @janyna, really cool! How many people get to showcase their sexy bones on Hive. Haha, you’re in an exclusive club. 🤗💕❤️🤗❤️💕🥰😘
PS: get well ❤️‍🩹 soon

Thank you, @itsostylish. You know how it is! You just take it one day at a time!
